Day 1 of our Eastern Kentucky Mission Trip is in the books!
We left the church bright and early this morning, excited and ready for whatever God had in store for us this week. The day started with a few unexpected challenges. We hit traffic, road construction, and even had to stop to replace a tire on one of our counselors’ vehicles. But through it all, God was faithful. We are so thankful the tire issue happened in a safe place where it could be changed without a dangerous blowout. The Lord truly blessed us with traveling mercies and brought our entire team safely to Kentucky.
After a quick lunch, we were back on the road and treated to some absolutely beautiful mountain views as we entered Eastern Kentucky. Pictures don’t do it justice!
When we arrived, the team here welcomed us with grilled hot dogs and chili before helping us get settled in. We quickly learned just how rural this area is. Cell service is almost nonexistent, and WiFi is very limited. Rather than seeing it as a problem, we challenged our group to view it as an opportunity, an internet fast of sorts, to focus more on God, each other, and the people we came to serve. We did discover one special spot that provides just enough signal to send a message home. We have officially named it “The Phone Tree!” Parents, just know we are alive and well!
This afternoon we got down to business, learning our responsibilities for the Backyard Bible Clubs we’ll be leading this week. It has been exciting to watch our older students step up into leadership roles while our younger students eagerly jump in to help wherever needed. As of tonight, we are expecting around 60 children between the two Bible clubs tomorrow.
Of course, preparing for ministry required a very important task. We had to test out all the games so we could learn the rules. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it!
We’ve already spotted a bear, and we’ve been warned to stay close to the bunkhouse at night because of bobcats and coyotes. Thankfully, there’s also a beautiful creek running right in front of the bunkhouse that makes this place feel like something out of a postcard.
It’s been a long, fun, and eventful first day. The lights are out, everyone is settling in, and we’re preparing for an early morning. We are praying that God will move in a powerful way tomorrow. Not only in the lives of the children we’ll meet, but also in the hearts of our own students and leaders.
Please continue to pray for safety, open hearts, and for God to do more than we could ever ask or imagine this week.
Eastern Kentucky, we’re ready. ❤️
