Does God have a gender?

For many of us, the language we use for God is so familiar that we hardly notice it anymore. Father. Lord. King. He.

But Scripture is wider than that. The Bible also speaks of God as a mother comforting her child, a woman in labor, and a hen gathering her chicks. The Christian tradition has carried this language too, from the early church to Julian of Norwich, who wrote that God is “as really our Mother as our Father.”

This week in The Hard Questions, Father Lee explores why the language we use for God matters — not because we are trying to make God smaller, but because God is always bigger than the words we use.

There is a prayer we say most Sundays without thinking too hard about it.

This week, as we prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, we're stopping to actually read it.

The Collect asks God to help us proclaim truth with boldness — and minister justice with compassion. Both. Together.

Those two pairs are easy to say. They are genuinely hard to hold at the same time. The church has a long record of choosing one and dropping the other.

This week's blog post is about what it looks like when we try to hold both — and what Juneteenth has to say about that.
