She wasn't supposed to be in the story. A Canaanite woman, shouting for her daughter, met first with silence and then with a hard line about dogs and crumbs — and she out-argued Jesus anyway.

This week's readings (Isaiah, the Psalm, Matthew 15) are about a house of prayer that keeps getting bigger, not because the people inside decide to be generous, but because someone outside refuses to leave.

Is hell real? Maybe the hell you grew up with was used against you — held over you as a threat, wielded to control or shame. If that's where you carry it, you're not wrong to be suspicious of what you were told. The tradition is larger than the version that scared you. And if you've never thought about it much, this might be the question worth sitting with: not what happens to other people, but what it means that love can be freely refused. The answer to that question says something about both human dignity and divine love that nothing else quite reaches.
