St. Bede Chapel at UM

St. Bede Chapel at UM We are a place where progressive Christianity & traditional worship meet. Episcopalian, Lutheran, Roman Catholic and diverse other students are in our group.

All are welcome! The Episcopal Church Center at the University of Miami offers weekly worship services and student suppers on Sundays, free yoga classes on Sundays and Wednesdays, occasional group discussions, and other special activities from time to time throughout the year. We are a center for progressive Christianity. The word "Episcopal" describes what we have to offer, but in a typical year

half or more of our students are not Episcopalians. All are welcome regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religious background.

Pentecost yesterday at the Chapel, my penultimate Sunday. Pentecost is as important as Easter Day and Christmas, but even church folk tend not to think of it as such, probably because, of the “Big Three,” only Pentecost has not been commercialized by secular society.

Today the Church remembers Óscar Romero and the martyrs of San Salvador, witnesses who loved with such clarity that it cost them everything. I carry their memory into this day aware of how familiar the world still feels, the suffering, the disorientation, the ache of watching harm unfold while trut...

For the past several years, I have been invited to Ramadan prayers and Iftar (the break-the-fast dinner after sundown) at the Islamic Center of Miami in Miami Gardens. The imam, Abdul-Hamid Samra, is something of a Renaissance man: besides being an imam, for several years he has taught at the University of Miami's College of Engireering. He and his wife Zahra are lovely people and are an integral part of Miami's wonderfully diverse community.

This past Sunday was the First Sunday in Lent, when we always read the Gospel passage about Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. This year we read Matthew's version. One of the three temptations that Jesus rejects is the notion that to be Messiah means to have earthly power and control over the kingdoms of the earth. If Jesus rejects that temptation, then we the purported (or aspirational) followers of Jesus must also reject that temptation. The Christian nationalists have succumbed to that temptation, thereby bowing down and worshipping the devil. Christian nationalists have sold their souls. The rest of us most be vocal in opposing that.
