The Superabundance of God’s Grace
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.
(Romans 5:20, NKJV)
Paul explains that the Mosaic law entered so sin might increase. The more the law is preached, the more sin increases, because the strength of sin is the law (1 Cor. 15:56). So when you respond to sin by preaching more law, you only fuel it. But where sin increased, grace increased even more. Sin cannot stop God’s grace, but God’s grace can stop sin. Which is greater—your sin or God’s grace? God’s grace is always greater! Paul is saying that where there is sin—“missing the mark”—there you will also find God’s grace: His unmerited favor in superabundant measure for your empowerment and victory. Just as Jesus overcame death and the grave, grace always overcomes sin. Contrary to traditional thinking, God’s grace does not abandon you when you miss the mark. Keep listening to teaching about Jesus and His finished work, and keep meditating on His love and what He accomplished on the cross, because grace is the only power that can stop sin in your life. When you fail, instead of feeling guilty and condemned, receive the superabounding grace of God that tells you that you are still righteous in Christ. Victory over sin comes only when people encounter the superabundance of God’s grace. It is His Grace that has made sinners righteous!
