God’s Angels

I am going to send an Angel in front of you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Exodus 23:20

I had just returned home from rehab after having total hip replacement surgery. I live in an independent apartment in a retirement community, and there were many things I could not do for myself. But a friend asked if she could shop for me. Another friend wheeled a wheelchair wherever I needed to go. A third offered to do my laundry. And some friends offered to pick me up for church. I believe they were angels sent by God to help me.
As I thought about all these folks who were angels to me, I wondered how many times I had missed being God’s Angel for someone else. Even when I physically cannot do what they need done, I can always pray for them and their needs.
We all have opportunities to help in many ways if we are alert to God’s guiding us to the needs of others. Each of us has talents and abilities which can be used to serve God by serving others. Ask God to guide you to the person for whom you can be an Angel—and remember to thank God for the angels sent to help you.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for sending angels to help us. Show us where we can be helpful in return so that those in need can see your love through us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

What is God choosing you to do? Is it inconceivable to you and to others that God would choose you to be and to do something that seems impossible or unimaginable? At times God chooses the most unlikely people to do the things God requires. But God provides opportunities for the chosen ones to do the will of God.
We often silence the internal voice when it is difficult to accept that God has chosen us to do a great thing in the name of God. Today, look inside, see what God is calling you to do, and go ahead and do it. God is with you. God empowers you. God will bring you through. Just do it in the name of God.

Prayer for the Day: Holy One, empower our hearts to fulfill by faith and with confidence your call on our lives. Amen.

God Will Guide Me

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge God, and God will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5,6

As a single mother juggling full-time employment and student life, the weight of uncertainty often feels heavy upon my shoulders. Countless times I’ve grappled with the question: What direction does God want me to go? Then hesitation grips my heart, followed by waves of anxiety. I’ve wondered: How can I possibly discern God’s voice amidst the chaos of my busy life?
However, when I surrender my fears and uncertainties to the Lord, I experience a profound sense of peace. Through prayer, meditating on scripture, and a willingness to obey, I’ve discovered that God’s voice speaks loudest in the stillness of trust. Despite ongoing challenges and constant changes in direction, I’ve learned to rest in the assurance that God is leading me. God’s promise to direct my path brings me comfort and strength.
No matter the obstacles that may come my way, I am confident that God’s faithfulness will see me through. I trust that God will guide me toward God’s perfect will.

Prayer: Dear God, in the midst of life’s uncertainties, help us to trust in you. May your peace and presence be our constant companions as we navigate the unknown. Amen.

The Narrow Way

Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate…for the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
Matthew 7:13,14

One day I needed time to think and reflect on all that was happening in my life. I decided to go for a walk in the forest on a path I have walked many times before. The cloudy day matched my mood. As I approached the trail, what I saw disappointed me further. Weeds had taken over and choked out the once lovely path. I almost turned back, but looking more closely, I could see that the encroaching weeds had left a narrow trail down the center. Had I turned back I would have missed out on the restorative peace that walk brought me.
I realized that this is often what I do when something looks hard. When I think there are barriers or I cannot see a clear path forward, I turn back and surrender to the weeds of life rather than trust that God will open a path before me and show me the way.
Traipsing between the weeds made me think of today’s quoted scripture. I truly felt God’s presence on my walk that morning. And I was reminded that if I allow the weeds of life to deter me from walking the narrow path to God, I miss out on the restoration, newness of life, and clarity that comes only from walking with the Lord.

Prayer: God of creation, may we seek to walk the narrow path to you. Help us remember today and every day that you provide a way through the weeds of life. Amen.

How do others see us, and for what do they know us? Our outward appearance is a fact of birth, perhaps even an accident of circumstances. But the activities that name us are the outcomes that emanate from the heart. When our hearts are turned to God, God’s presence directly influences what we do. God’s grace is available to all, and those who take advantage of the freely offered love and direction will be commended for the wisdom of their actions. May it be do with all of us.

Prayer for the Day: Guide our activities this day, O God, that we might act in ways that speak not only of our cleverness but of your guiding presence. Amen.

Love by Henri Nouwen

How can someone trust in the existence of an unconditional divine love when most, if not all, of what they have experienced is the opposite of love—fear, hatred, violence and abuse?
They are not condemned to be victims! There remains within them, hidden though it may be, the possibility to choose love. Many people who have suffered the most horrendous rejections and been subject to the most cruel tortures have been able to choose love. By choosing love they became witnesses not only to human resiliency but also to the divine love that transcends all human loves. Those who choose, even on a small scale, to live in the midst of hatred and fear are the people who offer true hope to our world.
