For the first time in perhaps several hundreds of years, the sounds of rifle volleys and taps were heard at this unique burial place containing the remains of persons who died in the trek North to Sacket's Harbor and the War of 1812.
Thank you to the Copenhagen American Legion and the Walter French Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans for rendering honors this Memorial Day, on site.
Fred Wadsworth, Denmark Town Councilman, has assured me that an effort to fence the area is underway. It is my personal hope that this can be accomplished in a timely manner, so I can be assured the cemetery will not slip back into the clutches of forest after my death.

Today Dr. Laurie Rush, Director of Cultural Affairs for Fort Drum military installation lead a group cleaning up the cemetery followed by establishing a grid and mapping the cemetery. All rocks or stones that appeared to be connected with a burial were plotted. (Isn't plotted a good word when we're talking cemeteries!) Lester Beyer and Chrissy removed more than two dozen small trees that had encroached the confines earlier in the week.
As a cemetery advocate I had spent much time there, but, now with the maintenance accomplished I can begin to see a pattern of interments.
Covid19 behaving, we are hoping to have a service of recognition on the site in 2021 near Memorial Day. We have a Revolutionary War veteran buried there as well as the active duty 1812 Troops and veterans.
Our national pride in our heritage must never be allowed to pass from the scene.

Met this evening with Dr. Laurie Rush, Director of Cultural Affairs (I think), (we call her post archeologist) from Fort Drum and Denmark Town Liaison Fred Wadsworth at the cemetery. A date has been set for Drum to provide some assistance in doing a very careful clean up of the site. We are expecting a representative of the Native American Community to visit quite soon. All moves forward with caution and respect.

Lester Beyer, Commander of American Legion Post 723, Copenhagen, NY installed a small temporary sign indicating the location of the War of 1812 military cemetery. For reasons that I don't know FB will not let me post Lester's picture. If you call me I can tell you what he looks like. Thanks for all the interest and support our little effort has received.

This is the start of a FB page for a small, neglected rural cemetery in our township. I am new to being a face-book administrator, so please bear with me. I suspect the cemetery has had more visitors and interest in the past month than in the last 100 years, or more. The critical difference in this cemetery than most is that it is reputed to hold the remains of active-duty personnel of the War of 1812, not just veterans of that conflict. In effect, a miniature Arlington.
A representative of the Daughters of the Veterans of the War of 1812 visited today, Bette Lathan of Martinsburg, Bette is a veteran of these clean-up and recognition efforts in saving our heritage. Our township has heard our plea and placed Councilman Fred Wadsworth as liaison/committee member to that municipal body. Thanks to Lester Beyer for some site clean-up efforts.
We do not need your money, but, your encouragement and interest would be appreciated. Friend us please! fr. sam
