Cooperstown Cemetery is ready for Memorial Day. Our groundskeeper has had a couple busy days mowing and trimming since the rain left the region on Wednesday. (Thanks, Brad!) Members from Gordon M. Lindgren American Legion Post #143 placed flags on Veterans' graves this morning. Many gravesites had flowers and other mementos placed by family members and friends. These pictures do not do justice in how pretty the Cemetery looks this weekend.

🇺🇸 Inspired by my posting a couple months ago, and with Memorial Day coming up on May 26, I listed out the Veterans buried in Cooperstown Cemetery. Working through our records, and keeping in mind this listing might not be 100% correct, I have noted there are 153 Veterans buried in Cooperstown Cemetery. Sorted out by time (or type) of service, these include 10 Civil War Veterans, 3 Spanish American War Veterans, 25 World War I Veterans, 68 World War II Veterans, 10 Korean War Veterans, 14 Viet Nam Veterans, 15 Veterans who served during a Peace Time, and 6 Veterans who served in the National Guard or Air National Guard. In addition, there are 2 Veterans for whom I can not be sure when they served. A thank you to all those who've served and all who are still are serving. 🇺🇸

Inspired by a casual remark made by a friend, I thought it would be interesting to see where those buried in Cooperstown Cemetery were born. So, over a few days, I went through the Cooperstown Cemetery listings on Find-A-Grave and noted the birth place for each person. See the pictures for the results. **The totals might not be 100% accurate.

Today, I met Les and Elaine Senff from Oregon out at the Cemetery. They were in the area visiting and tending to Les' family members' gravesites here and at Valley City. Les' great-aunt Ada and great-uncle Ernie Kopperud are buried at Cooperstown Cemetery, as are Ernie's parents and sister. It was an honor and privilege to show them the sites for Ada and Ernie.

Cooperstown Cemetery looked very nice yesterday in the morning sunshine and with many families already having placed flowers and mementos on the sites where their loved ones are buried.

As well, Cooperstown's American Legion Gordon Lindgren Post 143 members and volunteers spend several hours each year placing a flag on each Veteran's grave site at cemeteries in the Cooperstown area. We thank them for their dedication in recognizing their Comrades in Arms.

In Cooperstown Cemetery alone, these are the numbers of Veterans that are buried here, by conflict: Civil War-9, Spanish American War-3, World War I-25, World War II-68, Korean War-10, Viet Nam War-14. There are also several who served during Peacetime or in a non-conflict post-16; and there are those who served in the National Guard or Air National Guard-6.

Our thanks to their years of service, and in some cases, gave their lives, in protecting the United States and their Allies.

Griggs County Museum posted this on their FB page January 1, 2024. As noted on their post, this came from Griggs County Sentinel Courier, January 28, 1937. (Thanks to Jan Steffen.) The second picture is from May 2021 before the door was painted in 2022 and the third picture is from May 2023 after some of the scrub/overgrowth was removed. Plans are to paint the hinges and security bar a glossy black to really set off the look of the doors.

As you stop at Cooperstown Cemetery this year to visit loved ones, please remember to stay on the roads....please do not drive on the grass. Thank you!

There had been two trees in the center of the cemetery for many years, though both long dead, and they created a picturesque texture to the view. Last November, because of very strong winds, one tree was blown to bits. I would have liked to have seen that happen...it must have been quite a sight! On Sunday, sadly (but necessary), both trees were removed.

We had some mighty, steady vicious winds yesterday, November 6, in the 40-50 mph range. I decided to check on the cemetery to see how monuments, etc., fared. Didn't see any new "tip-overs" at a quick scan but did see that one of the two trees in the middle of cemetery, one on each side of the middle road, had been destroyed. Both trees are dead and did need to be taken down anyway, but they added a definite "texture" to the look of the landscape of the cemetery. At the west edge road looking east is the "after" picture, then the "before" picture (taken a few weeks ago). The third picture is looking east-to-west at the downed tree, and the fourth picture is a close-up looking from southwest-to-northeast. Uffda.
