T H Hunter is recorded as the oldest grave in Lovelady Cemetery, dying 19 Nov 1814.
Did you know the oldest recorded grave in Putnam County is 1814? Here's the info provided by Cookeville History Museum "The Quarles Cemetery is often cited as the oldest documented cemetery in Putnam County, Tennessee. It is located in the White Plains area of Algood, central Putnam County. The earliest death date found in the cemetery belongs to William P. Quarles, who died in 1814. He was a Revolutionary War soldier who came to the area with his family in 1809. The cemetery is located off I-40, taking Exit 290, heading north on Highway 70, turning right onto S. Dry Valley Road, then right again onto Old Walton Road. The cemetery is surrounded by a chain-link fence and contains a number of unmarked graves. William P. Quarles's grave is significant as it is the oldest documented burial in the cemetery. "
This means Lovelady Cemetery has either the oldest or second oldest known burial in Putnam County. That's significant from a historical standpoint!

There is no official fund, etc for the cemetery care but if you'd like to contribute time or $ to have the cemetery mowed, let us know and we'll work that out!
THANK YOU to Eric Cremeans for donating his time and labor and materials to build a sign to replace the one that had deteriorated. He has no family there but respected those in the cemetery and wanted to help. I hope some people with family there will contribute to the care as well.

Yesterday, I (Connie Farris) took pictures of some gravestones that have been cleaned by the Old Sparta Cemetery Project Group. The before pictures are from Find A Grave. The difference is amazing!

Thank you to this dedicated group of individuals, who donate their time and energy to the preservation and restoration of the Old Sparta Cemetery! You're incredible!

(This is the same process used by Dr. Stacey Graham and Dr. Lydia Simpson from MTSU Center of Historical Preservation, during their on-site visit to Lovelady Cemetery in May).
