Ancient Word No. 13: εἰρήνη (eirēnē)

It means peace, safety, tranquility.

You may know it already. It gives English the word "irenic" and the name Irene.

Paul uses it to greet the churches:
Ephesians 1:2
Philippians 1:2
Romans 1:7

Here is the hard part for translators. When Paul greets these churches with "peace," is he talking about a subjective feeling God gives them? Or an objective spiritual reality God gives them?

This week's word is Greek: εἰρήνη (eirēnē).

Paul opens his letters with it again and again. Most of us read right past it.

So what did Paul mean when he wished a church "peace"? Was it a feeling? Or something more?

📜 Ancient Word Breakdown:

“Testamentum” is a word most students of the Bible can easily recognize. But even such a recognizable word contains difficulties in translation.

For example: why would Latin translators of the New Testament use “testamentum” for “covenant” when “pactum” (a word we previously shared) and “foedus” already carry that meaning? What is so special about “testamentum”?

At last week's ARTS meeting, we saw this report: 95 Christian colleges, universities, and seminaries in the U.S. and Canada ceased independent operation between 2016 and 2026.

We trust the Lord will raise up men to lead local churches. Pray for GBTS and our sister seminaries as we seek to faithfully serve pastors, churches, and the Kingdom of God for generations to come.
