The Crain-Maling Center of Jewish Culture at Hendrix College will host a lecture tonight (October 29, 2013) entitled "The Role of the Yeshiva in the Jewish Experience, from Ancient to Modern Times,” by Rabbi Dr. Jerold Isenberg. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Worsham Hall in the Student Life and Technology Center at Hendrix. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a reception with refreshments will follow.

Yeshiva is a Jewish educational institution that focuses on the study of traditional religious texts, primarily the Talmud and Torah. The Yeshiva serves as the highest educational institution for Rabbinical training, and wields immense power as the principal body for interpreting Jewish law. In his lecture, Rabbi Isenberg will delve into the origins of this institution, and describe its continued relevance and influence in religious life today.

Rabbi Dr. Jerold Isenberg has been affiliated continuously with Hebrew Theological College in Chicago, Illinois since 1967. From its Fasman Yeshiva High School, he graduated into the Beis Midrash College program, earning a Bachelor of Hebrew Letters degree and, concurrently, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Roosevelt University. He began teaching at Hebrew Theological College in 1974 and was appointed Dean of Students. He thereafter served as Academic Vice President of that institution, while obtaining a Master of Science in Mathematics from Northeastern Illinois University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago. In 1988 he received his doctorate from Jewish University of America. Most recently, Rabbi Dr. Isenberg has served as Chancellor of the Hebrew Theological College of Chicago.

An informational and thought-provoking lecture last night, sponsored by the Crain-Maling Center, and featuring Dr. Daniel Pipes, founder and director of the Middle East Forum and Campus Watch. Dr. Pipes is widely considered one of the world's foremost experts on the concerns of the U.S. and Israel as related to the rise of militant Islam. The Crain-Maling Center was also happy to welcome at this lecture Dr. Michael Maling, of Northwestern University Medical Center and the Crain-Maling Foundation in Chicago, who serves as the primary benefactor of our Crain-Maling Center programs here at Hendrix.

The Crain-Maling Center at Hendrix College would like to make sure that all of our friends are aware of an outstanding speaker presentation planned for this coming Sunday evening, October 27th. Specifically, the Crain-Maling Center is sponsoring Dr. Daniel Pipes, a Harvard-educated researcher and well-published author whose main area of interest is in Middle East strategic analysis. Dr. Pipes is felt by many to be the world's foremost authority on the dynamics between the U.S., Israel, and militant Islam. Some of you are probably familiar with Dr. Pipes as Founder and President of both the Middle East Forum and Campus Watch, as well as from his extensive on-camera interview segments in the movie "2016: Obama's America." Most recently, Dr. Pipes has served as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University.

The Crain-Maling Center invites and welcomes to this free lecture all members of the Hendrix, Conway, and Central Arkansas community at-large, and we encourage attendance by members of all religious groups (Jewish, Christian, and others) who have an interest in Israel and U.S. security concerns. Dr. Pipes' lecture topic, "The Middle East in Upheaval: Implications for Israel and the United States," seems particularly timely given recent events in the Middle East. It is rare to have a speaker of Professor Pipes' stature travel here to Arkansas to give this type of presentation, and we thus hope that many of you will take time to attend. Full information is available at the Hendrix website link below.
