UPDATED VERSION:

The atmosphere has been buzzing lately at Conway First United Methodist Church, as a hive housing about 50,000 honey bees was removed from the upper reaches of the Sanctuary building.
During inspections for roof repair and upcoming Sanctuary painting, it was determined that a hive was active and the bees needed to be removed before work could be done. Ed Spears, director of hospitality and building maintenance, contacted a couple of different beekeepers in the area to help with the work. Once the removal was approved, Ed donned a beekeeper’s suit and went up in a lift to cut back the siding around the hive. At that point, he saw that the hive was larger and older than expected, and needed expert removal services.
On Friday, May 15, White’s Honey Bees in Springfield (Conway County) began removing the bees, the honey comb and the honey from the area. They estimated that there were between 50,000 and 60,000 bees in the hive.
Using smoke, a high-powered vacuum and a regular kitchen spatula, one worker took care of the hive and combs up in the air. Another worker stayed on the ground to separate bees and secure the comb for travel to their apiary. The queen bee was found, and the bees were removed with just a few stings to those working around the hive.
