Happy Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! To keep you in the mood, here’s a video of our postlude from today’s Mass– Tuba Tune on LOURDES HYMN (“Immaculate Mary”) by Luigi Mengoni. Just for fun, I worked in some clips of me playing this time, so you can see what’s actually going on at the console.

Organist friends– if you like this postlude, good news! It’s not difficult, and it’s free on IMSLP. https://imslp.org/wiki/Tuba_Tune_on_Lourdes_Hymn_(Mengoni%2C_Luigi)

Just as a month ago we packed up our Christmas ornaments, now we prepare for one last hoorah before we box up our Alleluias and store them for the penitential season of Lent. In that spirit, here’s the postlude for this weekend’s masses— ‘Nun Danket Alle Gott’ Op. 65, No. 59, by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933), which sets the familiar melody of “Now Thank We All Our God” as a triumphal march.

The organ prelude for this weekend’s Epiphany masses is the Marche des Rois Mages (March of the Magi Kings) by Théodore Dubois (1837-1924). The sustained high note represents the star guiding the Magi. On a personal note– I have a special affection for this piece which goes back to my childhood, when I would look forward to hearing it played every year at the Doane Academy Christmas Mystery pageant.

Advent Lessons and Carols! Please consider joining us, or even helping out.

St. Matthew Parish is pleased to present an Advent service of Lessons and Carols, to be held on Sunday, December 17th, at 3 PM. At the core of the service will be a series of seasonal readings, beginning with Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden and culminating in St. John’s unfolding of the Mystery of Christ’s Incarnation. Special music will reflect and comment on the readings–carols sung by the congregation as well as anthems presented by the combined music ministries of St. Matthew Parish and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bridgeport. The choir will be co-directed by St. John’s music director Deborah Rojas and St. Matthew’s music director Gareth Haynes. Dr. William J. Gatens, of St. John’s, will play the organ. If you are interested in participating in the choir, please email Gareth Haynes at [email protected].
