Poplar Tent barbecue is the best around! In 1945, the members of Poplar Tent gathered all the items needed and prepared a meal of BBQ, slaw, brunswick stew, and dessert. They donated whole hogs, chicken, beef, beans, tomatoes, cabbage, corn and many other items along with a great deal of time, to make the first BBQ a success. We've come a long way from cooking 5 hogs to now cooking over 12,000 pou
nds of pork! The primary purpose was, and still is, to raise money for the upkeep and maintenance of the facilities of the church. BBQ proceeds have paid for many expansion projects of the church including the educational wing, the fellowship building, the Sunday school rooms past the stairway upstairs, new multi-stall restrooms downstairs, and the multi-purpose building. Additionally, BBQ proceeds have paid to repave the church parking lot, paint the outside of the church and fellowship building, install vinyl siding on the fellowship building, replace the sanctuary air conditioner, purchase an illuminated church sign, and to recently purchase new heat pumps for the Fellowship Hall. The BBQ continues the ministry of Poplar Tent Church by contributing 15% to our church's youth program and the Needy Family Fund. This additional source of income allows Poplar Tent Church to use weekly donations for the general weekly expenses, educational resources, outreach, and other missions of the church.
