Dear friends,

This Sunday we will conclude our sermon series wrestling with the questions posed by the curious kids of this congregation as we wrestle with a question about what heaven looks like. Like so many of the questions we have discussed this summer, this is a big question and not one that I know the answer to. I have a good idea of what I hope heaven looks like, and I sure hope it looks a little bit like the Blue Ridge mountains in early fall. While scripture does not give us many images of what heaven looks like, the prophet Isaiah (6:1-3 and 11:1-9) shares visions that can shape our hopes, and remind us that whatever heaven looks like, it will be good. Why? Because God is in control, and God is good.

If we haven’t yet addressed your question, or your curious kid’s question, don’t worry! In the coming weeks, Pastor Ellen and I both will sit down for a rapid fire conversation addressing the other great questions we received ahead of this series.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday as we packed more than TEN THOUSAND nutrient-rich meals with Rise Against Hunger for communities experiencing food insecurity, famine, and natural disasters. What an awesome annual reminder of the difference it makes to come together to worship and work together.

The Presbyterian Women held their 2026–2027 Kick-Off Dinner and Event on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Davis Hall, with 45 in attendance. Pastor Ellen Crawford True welcomed the attendees and blessed a delicious meal prepared by PB&J Catering. Moderator Cindy Wise then presented a video featuring Rev. Dr. Rhonda Mawhood Lee, author of the new Presbyterian Women Bible Study, “United Through Christ, Bound to Each Other: Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.”

Kathy Pilkington shared information regarding the Ridenhour Scholarship. Attendees were provided with updated PW Directories and copies of the Bible Study and circles met in individual breakout groups. The Presbyterian Women extend a warm invitation to all women in the church and our community. We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Dear Friends,

This week’s question from our curious kids is, “Where do God and Jesus live?” How would you answer? As a child, I imagined God sitting on a cloud, just out of sight, but the book of Revelation has something else to suggest: “See, the home of God is among mortals.” Really? Our text for this week is Revelation 21:1-6a. What does it tell us about where God chooses to live?

All Noisy Offering donations support the Presbyterian Women’s Backpack Program, providing supplemental food for our neighbors in need at Coltrane Webb Elementary School.

Dear Friends,

As we continue our “Curious Kids” worship series, this week’s question is “How does God make prayers come true?” Exploring this question gives us a chance to reflect on how we understand prayer. In the three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray (with a bit of commentary on how NOT to pray). On Sunday, we’ll look at Matthew 6:5-14, this gospel’s version of the Lord’s Prayer. What does this text teach us about prayer? What does it teach us about ourselves? About God?

The last chance to register for our August Lunch Bunch is tomorrow at noon! Next week we will meet for lunch in Davis Hall on Tuesday, August 25th at 11:45 AM to learn more about Cabarrus Health Alliance (CHA), the public health authority for Cabarrus County. We will start with a short program over lunch in Davis Hall and later will travel to the brand new Cabarrus Health Alliance location at CCM’s Rebuilder Campus at Brown Mill (~5 minute drive). CHA staff will provide a tour of the repurposed mill building along with a quick smoothie snack.

All are welcome at Lunch Bunch, but reservations need to be made today or tomorrow morning by calling the church reservation line at 704-788-2100 extension #7. The cost of the catered meal will be $15. Please leave the names of all guests as well as your own and a phone number where you can be reached on the message.

Presbyterian Women attended the 2026 Women’s Connection at Montreat Conference Center Conference Center, which invited attendees into the beauty of Montreat for “Horizon Gazing: Hope in the Here and Now.” The Rev. Jihyun Oh—the Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly—spoke on the role of the General Assembly in our denomination. The keynote speaker was cultural historian Kristen Kobes Du Mez, who discussed her book “Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted A Faith and Fractured A Nation,” as well as her upcoming book, “Live Laugh Love: A Revelatory History of White Christian Womanhood in the United States.” Conference pastor and Associate Dean of Worship and Spiritual Formation at Chandler School of Theology, the Rev. Khalia Williams, preached on finding hope in Psalm 121.

Conference artist Cantey Smith’s artistic work through the conference invited attendees “to look toward the horizon of faith with steadiness and authentic hope.” Attendees were entered into a raffle for one of the banners of Smith’s artwork and our own PW Moderator Cindy Wise was selected! This artwork will be on display at FPC as a reminder “to be grounded in community and anchored in God’s faithful presence.”

We hope you will save the date, both for next year’s Women’s Connection at Montreat, August 13-15, 2027, and for our first church retreat at Montreat in years, which will be April 9-11, 2027 and which you can register for by using the link in the comments below!

Register to Rise Against Hunger Today! Our annual meal packing event with Rise Against Hunger will take place on Sunday, August 30. From 3 to 5pm in Davis Hall, we will gather to pack more than ten thousand meals that will go directly to communities around the world experiencing extreme food insecurity and famine. This event is a great way to make a big difference in a short amount of time, and is open to families and members of all ages. We will not only be fighting hunger, but also dancing and forging deeper intergenerational friendships in our hair nets and gloves. Please register when you can in the comments below.
