Haitians are essential to the fabric of Massachusetts. Ending TPS would separate families, harm our economy & deplete our workforce. I won’t stand for it.

Marcelo Gomes da Silva, the Milford teen detained by ICE last year, had high hopes for his visit to Washington, D.C., but was reportedly escorted out of the Capitol chamber after the Department of Homeland Security posted on social media targeting him.

I covered the genocide of the Rohingya in Myanmar, and the horror of it still haunts me. So I was doubly wounded to hear that a blind, elderly Rohingya man, a survivor of the genocide who settled in Buffalo, NY, was picked up by immigration officials last week -- and ended up dead.

It's a more complicated story but in a nutshell the immigration officers realized that they didn't have any grounds to hold him, so they released him -- in Buffalo in the winter five miles from his home. This is an elderly man who needs a walking stick and can't speak English. He apparently died while trying to walk back to his house.

We don't know exactly what happened yet, but I keep thinking of this blind man who survived a genocide yet did not survive an encounter with American immigration officials. Is this really the kind of country we aspire to be? https://www.investigativepost.org/2026/02/25/blind-refugee-abandoned-by-border-patrol-is-dead/?fbclid=IwY2xjawQMt1RleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEedftgY4TBLfD65u2LkHhte3Rfp1ujyuJGK3y3JeygD-BdL3nbE0IJCNSLwLY_aem_QXPTJq0c74jAHNHmCYqkcQ
