Acting in Faith - Dramatic Resources Linked to the Lectionary

Acting in Faith - Dramatic Resources Linked to the Lectionary Acting in Faith aims to help people grow spiritually through creating and performing drama for worship.

Our workshops and scripts equip congregations with an excellent and sustainable drama ministry. Acting in Faith is proud to offer a variety of scripts designed to be used in worship. Most are linked to passages found in the Revised Common Lectionary. All require small casts and are easy to produce in a traditional chancel.

The Spirit is starting to blow! Pentecost is not far off. "Out of Control" is a great script if you would like to emphasize the unpredictability of God's Spirit in a light-hearted way. The phone at the Jerusalem Police Department is ringing off the hook because of the disturbance down at Fig and Vine. Bringing Peter in for questioning just makes matters worse! Here are a few shots from our production a few years ago. This one takes some rehearsal, so don't delay! You can find it on the Short Worship Dramas page of the website.

If you are still working on your Holy Week services, here are a couple of REALLY last minute scripts. "Lifted Up" is a Call to Worship for Good Friday that incorporates all of the lectionary texts for the day. "Too Good to Be True" is a six person readers theatre script based on the Easter account in Luke. That will take a little more effort, but there is still time. You can find both of them under "Short Worship Dramas" on the Acting in Faith website. www.actinginfaith.com

EASTER SUNRISE! If your church holds a sunrise service, figuring out a new approach each year can be touch. Acting in Faith has two scripts that might be a good fit. Especially if your sunrise service is outdoors, consider "Mistaken Identity". It's a monologue written from the perspective of the gardener that Mary Magdalen mistakes for Jesus that first Easter morning. Requires one man and minimal costuming.
If you have 3 men and 3 women, "Too Good to Be True" is based on Luke's account of the resurrection, and focuses on the disbelief of the men when they hear the women's story. It's a readers theatre, so no memorization is required.
You can find both of them on the Short Worship Dramas page of the Acting in Faith website.

The story of Mary anointing the feet of Jesus, John 12:1-9, is coming up on March 13. Acting in Faith has a wonderful script for this, "Perspectives". It's a series of short (2 min) monologues from Lazarus, Martha, Mary and Judas. The fragrance of the perfume Mary used affects each of them in very different ways. It's not difficult to perform and you have just enough time to prepare it well. You can find it on the Short Worship Dramas page of the website.

Working on your Ash Wednesday worship? consider "Blow the Trumpet", a four-person reading based on the lectionary passages from Joel, Psalm 51 and 2 Corinthians. It can be used as a Call to Worship or as a special moment later in the service. No memorization needed so you have time to get it ready. A combination of light and dark voices works best. You can find it on the "Short Worship Dramas" page. Cost is $10 with right to copy for your congregation. www.actinginfaith.com

Only four more days! If you are looking for something to perk up worship on Christmas Eve or the Sunday following, check out "Sing a New Song". It's a short choral reading based on the Lections for Christmas Day and Joy the World. It only needs four voices and requires very little rehearsal. Find it under the Short Worship Dramas tab.

As mentioned in the April newsletter, our youth and young adults performed a drama based on Peter and John healing the lame man at the temple steps in Acts 3. A couple of weeks ago, I worked with them on writing monologs from the perspective of various characters. But then I left it in their hands and it became a full-fledged script with lots of movement! They did a fabulous job. I didn't envision costumes either but as you can see they created some. Lots of creativity here!

We hope that your worship plans for Holy Week are in place and that you are beginning the week with confidence and joy. But, just in case you're still trying to put the finishing touches on, here are a few easy-to-rehearse scripts the can be used on Good Friday. Earthquake - a short monolog from the lips of Isaiah; What If? - a six-minute monolog from Peter, about how things might have turned out differently if he hadn't fallen asleep in the garden (can also be used on Holy Thursday) and Lifted Up - a choral reading call to worship. Look under Holy Week on the scripts page of the Acting in Faith website. http://www.actinginfaith.com/scripts_short.htm
