Say it out loud once. A glittering of hummingbirds. The old bird lists offer a few names for them, a shimmer, a hover, a tune, but glittering is the one that sticks, because that's exactly what a feeder full of them does to the morning light.

Here's the part that earns the name. Those wings are tracing a figure eight, not a flap, about fifty times a second. That little sideways eight is the same shape mathematicians use for infinity, and it's the trick that lets a hummingbird hover in place, slide straight up, and fly backwards out of a flower. No other bird on earth can truly do that.

So the next time one backs out of the bee balm like a tiny green tow truck in reverse, watch close. You're seeing the only reverse gear ever issued to a bird, parked right there in your yard. 🌺

What do you call the flash of red at the feeder when the whole family shows up at once? Somebody, somewhere, decided the right word is a radiance. A radiance of cardinals.

It fits. But here is the fact worth keeping. Across most of North America's songbirds, singing is a male's job. The cardinal never agreed to that. The female sings, clear and complicated, sometimes right from the nest. Mated pairs trade phrases back and forth, matching each other note for note, a duet running across your yard fence.

Ornithologists think her song may tell him exactly when to bring food and when to stay away. So the pretty whistling outside your window this evening might not be a serenade. It might be instructions.

They will not leave you this winter, either. Cardinals do not migrate. The pair at your feeder in August is the pair in your snow photos in January. The red stays all year too, brightest against the first snow.

This week, when you hear cardinal song, stop and listen for the answer. If a second voice trades the same phrase back, you have heard her. 🐦
