CATECHISM ON THE SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

To receive the Catholic Anointing of the Sick, a person must be a baptized Catholic who has reached the age of reason and is suffering from a serious illness, advanced age, or facing major surgery. You do not need to be at the point of death to receive it.
Core Eligibility Criteria
• Baptism: The recipient must be a baptized Catholic.
• Age of Reason: The person must be at least seven years old and capable of understanding the spiritual nature of the rite.
• Medical Condition: The faithful are eligible as soon as they begin to be in danger of death from sickness or old age.
Specific Situations That Qualify
• Serious Illness: Diagnoses of terminal or chronic diseases, including severe mental illness or substance addiction.
• Advanced Age: Elderly individuals who have become notably weakened by frailty, even if no specific critical illness is present.
• Upcoming Surgery: Scheduled for a major medical procedure requiring anesthesia due to a serious condition.
• Relapse or Worsening: The sacrament can be repeated if a person recovers and then falls ill again, or if their existing condition worsens.
Important Details
• The Minister: Only a priest or bishop can administer this sacrament. [1]
• Confession: If physically able, the recipient is encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) before being anointed. However, the Anointing of the Sick can forgive sins if the person is physically unable to confess.
• Last Rites: While formerly referred to strictly as "Last Rites," this sacrament is often part of a larger rite that may include Penance and the Eucharist (Viaticum). It is meant to be requested as soon as a serious condition arises, rather than waiting until the final moments of life.
• Deceased Persons: It is not given to someone who has already died; instead, the Church provides specific funeral prayers.
