Doing good feels good.

Big THANK YOU to The Andover Companies for inviting members of our team to join them in lending a helping hand at The Friendly Kitchen recently.

This crew worked hard cleaning, painting, polishing and more, giving The Friendly Kitchen guests a freshened-up space in which to dine.

What a great feel-good story!

In May 2023, the owner of a small pet store accidentally left the front door unlocked before heading home for the night.

It seemed like a simple mistake.

One that probably wouldn't matter by morning.

But sometime after the lights went out, the store's security cameras captured an unexpected visitor quietly wandering through the open doorway.

It wasn't a burglar.

Or a vandal.

It was a scruffy stray dog that had likely spent months surviving on the streets.

The tired dog cautiously explored the aisles, sniffing shelves filled with treats, toys, and pet supplies.

For a few moments, he simply looked around, as if he couldn't quite believe a place like this existed.

Then he stopped beside a display of soft pet beds.

He circled one of them a few times.

Curled into a tight little ball.

And, for what may have been the first time in a very long while, fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.

The following morning, the store owner arrived expecting an ordinary workday.

Instead, he found a sleeping dog stretched out comfortably on one of the display beds.

At first, he was surprised.

Then he checked the overnight security footage.

As he watched the exhausted stray quietly wander through the store before choosing a bed instead of food or mischief, his heart broke.

The dog hadn't come looking for trouble.

He had come looking for a safe place to rest.

The owner contacted local shelters and veterinarians to see whether anyone had reported the dog missing.

No one came forward.

The friendly stray had no identification, no microchip, and no family searching for him.

Healthy but completely alone, he had apparently been surviving on the streets by himself.

Rather than send him back outside, the owner made a decision that would change both of their lives.

He adopted the dog.

The staff named him Buddy.

What began as an accidental overnight visitor quickly became the heart of the store.

Buddy greeted customers at the front door each morning.

He happily accepted belly rubs from children, followed employees from aisle to aisle, and spent much of the day relaxing in the same cozy bed he had chosen on the night he wandered in.

Regular customers soon stopped asking where Buddy had come from.

Instead, they asked if he was working that day.

Before long, he had become the store's unofficial mascot, reminding everyone who walked through the door that sometimes the family you're searching for is found when you least expect it.

It's amazing how one forgotten lock...

became the open door to an entirely new life.
