I was reading thru my study Bible and came across a page on prophecies, so I thought I would share it. Often, prophecy is a written mental picture with a foreground, subject and background which portrays a timeline. I found the idea intriguing and decided to try and come up with an image, in my mind, that portrays what the Bible is. You that know me well, know my mind isn't right, but I digress, often.

I have heard said that the thread that holds the books of the Bible together is God's grace; that it is a cannon of God's love for His creation with mankind at the pinnacle of that creation; and that it is the blueprints for how man should live if he wants to walk in harmony with his Creator. All of which I am sure makes lovely sermons, but I find it to be more a story of redeeming a fallen creature; it is a story of salvation to mankind who had gone astray. One simple little command, and mankind screwed it up; look at all the hell mankind has brought upon not only himself, but the whole world, thru sin.

Human as my mind is, I image God up there in Heaven, reclining with His feet up, holding the entire universe together, with one finger by the way, saying: "OK you knuckleheads, you screwed that up and now you stay on that rock as I am not going to let you impregnate the rest of My good works with sin; Oh, and by the way, here is how the cow eats the cabbage."

So I went out and found this picture on the web that does a really good job of what came to mind. The timeline is from creation to God's kingdom; foreground lower left to background upper right. The subject, of course is the cross; the immaculate birth, life, ministry, suffering and death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus of Nazareth: the Christ, the Messiah. The cross dominates the picture. The cross is placed in a cemetery because of sin man brought into the world, and death because of it.

In the foreground we see the Old Testament, all of which points upward to the cross. In Christ's ministry, Christ said He came to fulfill the law and prophets; all of which points to the cross. In the background we see out of frame the Glory of God; the sun (Son of God), as it was, as it is, and as it shall be, as Christ is all! In the background we also see the fruits of the Church of Christ, yet still set in the grave yard of faith in Him who saves all who come to believe in His name.

I could go on with this, but I would rather leave this image to others who find the idea of prophecy also intriguing.

This past Sunday Advent has come; the reason for the season is here, the King is coming!

Luke 2:25-35 (NIV)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Come, Worship and witness the Joy of the coming King this season at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church! All are welcome with open hearts.
