You have come home to God before. At altars, in tears, after failures, more times than you can count, and every time you drifted off again. So when Sunday said you are home now, forever, a part of you flinched, because you have heard forever before and it did not hold. Look at the last word of the psalm, the one Sunday read as dwell. In the actual Hebrew, the word under dwell is a returning word. It means to turn back, to come home again. The last line does not say I shall settle in the house of the Lord. It says I shall RETURN to the house of the Lord, forever. And you do not use a returning word for someone who never left. Your wandering is written into the grammar of the promise. God saw every departure coming and still wrote forever over the returning. The road home was built for people who use it more than once. And this is the same word that ran through the whole series: the night Jesus told Peter, “when you have turned again” (Luke 22:32), the night the Shepherd restored your cast soul, “He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:3). The turning that started with Peter ends with you, walking through the door, home to stay. Your forever was never a promise that you would stop leaving. It was a promise that He would never stop bringing you back. The Jesus who told of a father running to a returning son, Luke 15:20, went to the far country Himself to carry you home. You are not home because you finally stopped leaving. You are home because He never stopped bringing you back.

On Sunday we watched the Shepherd turn a cast sheep back onto its feet. He restores my soul. But by Tuesday you can feel yourself drifting toward the same hollow you fell in last time, and a quiet dread comes with it: eventually He gets tired of me. Read the three words that finish the verse, the ones we always slide past. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. In the Hebrew mind, a name is not a label. It is reputation, character, the whole weight of who someone is. And notice: David does not say for MY name's sake. He says His. The reason the Shepherd keeps restoring you is moved off your record and onto His reputation. It does not say He keeps you because you kept your end. It says He keeps you because He is the kind of Shepherd who keeps sheep, and in that world a shepherd was known by the state of his flock. A lost sheep was not a stain on the sheep. It was a stain on the shepherd. So your falling is not the threat to His patience you fear. Ezekiel 36 says it out loud to a people who failed completely: it is not for your sake that I act, but for the sake of my holy name. A God who kept you for your sake would have to stop the day your sake ran out. A God who keeps you for His own name never runs out, because His name never fails. He does not keep you because you are worth keeping. He keeps you because of who He is, and His name is on it.
