Long Island Korean United Methodist Church is the oldest church which has so many heritage of faith in the Long Island area and an awesome place to come as
you are with Commack United Methodist Church which built in 1789. LIKUMC is a community of faith built with pure passion and love in the hope of dreaming, realizing, and sharing God’s dream together with people who live
without any meaningful dream, as well as in the hope of becoming a path of
blessings to local and global communities. LIKUMC, which is located in a beautiful environment near Long Island beach,
intends to create a community characterized by seven key themes: (1) worship,
(2) training, (3) healing, (4) nurturing, (5) mission, (6) bride, and (7) vision. LIKUMC therefore seeks to offer dynamic and inspiring worship services , to embrace the first and second generations together, to exert holy leadership roles in the local community, to heal the wounds of immigrant families, and to build a
community of pure brides in imitation of Jesus Christ. LIKUMC, as a community of dream and vision, is writing a new history of “Acts 29” through the acts of love and sacrifice, healing and reconciliation, and inspiration and voluntariness. 롱아일랜드 연합감리교회: 서퐄 카운티의 최초 한인교회
롱아일랜드 연합감리교회는 1978년 8월 6일에, 김성남목사를 모시고 32명의 성도가 박중기장로집에서 모여, 개척교회설립을 협의하고, 1978년 10월29일에 “롱아일랜드 중앙교회”라는 명칭으로 정식 창립예배를 드림으로써, 이지역 최초의 한인교회가 탄생하였다. 그뒤 약 9 개월동안 Huntington Seventh-day Adventist Church 에서 예배를 드렸다. 주위에서 모여드는 수많은 새교인들로인하여, 교회는 계속 확장되어서, 더큰 예배본당이 필요하게 되었기 때문에, 1979년 6월 10일에 현재 위치인 Commack United Methodist Church 로 교회를 이전하고, 이 교회를 개척한 김성남목의 추천으로 김상모 목사를 초대 담임목사로 모신후, 연합감리교 연회에 Long
Island Korean United Methodist Church (LIKUMC) 명칭으로 정식 가입하였다. 교회의 한글 명칭은 “롱아일랜드 중앙교회”로 유지하 면서, 롱아일랜드 서퐄 카운티의 유일한 한인교회로서 선교활동을 계속하게 되었다. 1979년 10월 14일에, 롱아일랜드 중앙교회는 제 1 주년 창립예배를 드렸다. 이예배에서, 9월에 창설된 본교회의
청소년오케스트라가 성가대와 협연으로 바흐의 칸타타 140번의 주재곡을 연주하여 찬사를 받았다. 교회 내외활동을 통하여 봉사정신을 길러주고, 지역사회에 기여 하는 봉사및 친선 활동에 중점을 둔 청소년오케스트라는, 매년 주위에있는수많은 미국교회들과 양노원들을 방문연주 하였다. 1980년 3월 16일에는 뉴욬주정부로부터 종교법인단체 LIKUMC 로 정식 인가를 받았다. 그해 10월 19일에 가진 교회 제 2주년 창립예배에서, 박중기장로, 손병우장로, 김중석권사, 배국진권사, 이용영권사 의 취임식도 거행하여, 본교회의 주요 일꾼들을 소개하였다. 1983년8월 12일에는 써퐄한국학교가 교포 2세들의 한글교육을 위하여 설립되었다. 1985년 부터는 “Korean Night” 를 본 교회의 중요한 행사로 설정하여, 지역사회에 한국문화, 예술, 풍습 및 음식을 소개하고, 한국과 한인에 대한 인식을 높이며 상호 유대관계를 강화 하였다. 롱아일랜드 연합감리교회는, 그동안 역대의 담임목사들과 교인들의 헌신적인 노력으로 교회발전을 이루어 왔으며, 후세대에게 더 큰발전을 위한 토대를 마련해 왔다. 2006년 부터는 알젠틴과 파라과이 해외선교활동이 전개 되었고, 금년초 부터는, 깊은 신앙과 진취적인 목회방침을 겸한 장재웅목사의 은혜스럽고 긍정적이며 희망에 찬 설교와 목회 스타일이 모든 세대의 교인들에게 큰 감명을 주고 있다. 구원을 원하거나 무거운 짐을 진자들을 위하여 교회문은 활짝 열려 있다.
대서양과 롱아일랜드만에 둘러 쌓인 아름다운 롱일랜드 서퐄 카운티에, 이 지역 최초의 한인교회로 33년이라는 오랜 기간에 걸처 주님의 말씀을 선포하고, 수많은 한인교포들에게 등대의 역활을 해온 “롱일랜드 연합감리교회”의 등불이 더욱 밝게 비추어지고 있다. 금년 1월에 담임목사로 부임한 장재웅 목사의 지도하에, 화기애애 하고 희망에 찬 분위기에서, 전교인들이 교회성장과 선교및 지역사회봉사에 몰두하고 있다. “롱아일랜드 연합감리교회” 는, 초창기에는 “롱아일랜드 중앙교회”로 알려져 있었고, 후일에는”롱아일랜드 한인 연합감리교회” 및 “코맥 감리교회”로 알려저 있었으며, 금년부터 “롱아일랜드 연합감리교회”로 명칭이 변경 되었다.
장재웅목사는 경주제일감리교회, 대구제일감리교회에서 어린시절을 보내고 자라나 감리교의 불모지였던 삼남연회(경상남북) 김재황감독(대구제일감리교회)이후 대구제일교회에서 처음으로 서울 감신을 입학, 아펜젤러선교사가 세운 한국의 모교회인 정동제일감리교회등에서 사역한 후 서울감신과 연세대학교 연합신학대학원을 졸업하고 1993년에 미국으로 건너와 서부의 감리교 명문대학 클레어몬트 대학원(MA, Doctor of Ministry)을 졸업하고 드류대학교, 풀러신학대학원에서 수학한 후 보스톤대학교 대학원을 졸업하였다. 캘리포니아의 남가주빌립보교회를 시작으로 담임목회를 시작한 지 13년이 되었다. 커네티컷 목회시절(2004-2010)에는 연합감리교 동북부 한인선교구(박정찬감독, 한상신감리사)산하의 선교교회로 시작하여 섬기던 커네티컷 중앙교회를 미연합감리교단에 뉴잉글랜드 역사상 14년만에 한인교회로서 가입케(Chartering)하고 성전을 입당하게 하는 등 활발한 사역을 감당하다 이번에 미 연합감리교단 뉴욕연회 감독의 파송을 받아 롱아일랜드 서폭카운티의 모교회인 롱아일랜드 연합감리교회로 부임하게 되었다.
