On Sunday, August 30, 1936, Comfort Baptist Church officially began with only 6 founding members. Visiting pastors in the area traveled to Comfort each Sunday to share sermons sometimes at the Comfort Park Pavilion, sometimes at the Community Church (which we now know as the Lutheran Church), and sometimes at the barracks at the school.
This handful of people persevered over the years because of their love of God and their strong Baptist beliefs. As the congregation grew, the need for a church building became more and more evident. Over the years, there have been numerous pastors, women, men, and children - generations of families - who have come and gone through the doors of two different Comfort Baptist Church buildings.
Over the years, the members have supported foreign missionaries, partnered with local ministries, and supported the Comfort community with programs like VBS, the Backpack program, and Trunk or Treat, Food Distribution, and Bible Studies for all ages through a strong commitment to do God's work.
This past Sunday, August 30, 2026, we were able to celebrate the hard work, and commitment to the Word of God, of all those who came before us. We feel so blessed to be able to continue what they started those 90 years ago, and we're excited to continue to find ways to serve our Comfort Community for years to come. God is so good!
Thank you to all those who joined us for this special anniversary and to all the volunteers who made this day possible. We were honored to welcome former pastors Jim Holt (CBC pastor for 40 years) and John Music (CBC pastor for 6 years) as they took us through a look back at the early days and gave us a glimpse of what's down the road as Christians. Thank you to the choir, the musicians and the special performances by Ellen Collie (CBC pianist for 50 years), and Craig Engleman and Jackie Morrison who sang a beautiful German hymn. Thank you to our guest speakers who were both long-time CBC members. Lastly, thank you to Riverside Catering for an absolutely incredible lunch!
