Old First Presbyterian Church

Old First Presbyterian Church Founded in 1806, Old First Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Columbus, Ohio. Sunday worship at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome. M. E.

Old First Presbyterian Church congregation celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2006, receiving a certificate from the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church USA. The church began in Franklinton in 1806, founded by Reverend James Hoge, who served First Presbyterian Church for 50 years; Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church on West Broad Street is named for him. The church was incorporated b

y the Ohio General Assembly in 1812, I believe. Lucas Sullivant was one of the founding members. Sensenbrenner was an elder here in the 1920s or 30s. The name change to Old First came in the 1950s when 2 Presbyterian denominations merged, and Columbus suddenly had 2 First Presbyterian Churches, one on Madison Avenue that promptly changed its name to Calvin PC and moved to Munks Corner (the original building is now Love Zion church), and one at 1101 Bryden Road that remained the same but adopted the name of Old First. You will find many references to Old First Presbyterian Church in Columbus Dispatch stories over the years. Many Presbyterian congregations in the city began as offshoots of this original congregation, including what is now First Congregational Church, Broad Street Presbyterian, and Brookwood Presbyterian. Old First is a very small congregation but it does date to 1806 and continues to witness in Columbus. The Community Organizing Center and Four Seasons City Farm community garden organization both have their offices at Old First.

Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) condemns bombing of Al-Ahli Hospital and demands Protection for the Christian Community and all in Gaza

On this blessed day of Palm Sunday, Christians around the world gather to worship and commemorate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem during one of the most sacred times of year as Holy Week begins.

Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) condemns in the strongest possible terms the bombing of Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. Al-Ahli is an Anglican institution and one of the oldest, continuously operating hospitals in Gaza. It is Gaza’s only Christian hospital and its only cancer treatment center. The bombing of the Anglican Al-Ahli Arab Hospital is a violation of the sacredness of life and it is especially abhorrent during this sacred time for Christians.

The deliberate targeting of a medical facility is a clear violation of international law—a war crime and a crime against humanity.

Longtime Columbus resident Margaret Ann (Briggs) Samuels, age 89, died May 11, at Brookdale Lakeview Crossing in Groveport, Ohio. Margaret Ann was born in Woonsocket, South Dakota, in 1934, and raised on a farm near Forestburg, where she attended high school. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and German at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. She then married Larry D. Samuels in 1957 and spent many years raising their five children.

Margaret Ann earned her law degree from Ohio State University in 1974 and worked as an attorney for the State of Ohio, first in the Attorney General’s office, then in the Office of Consumers' Counsel (OCC), both in Columbus, before her retirement in 1996. As the Federal Counsel for the OCC, she successfully advocated for Ohio consumers in many utilities law cases.

She was active in environmental and in progressive causes, especially through her decades at Old First Presbyterian Church in Columbus. She loved gardening and helped administer the Four Seasons City Farm. She loved birding, taught to her by her Aunt Addie, and could identify birds by song. She loved Mozart.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Winslow Briggs; her father, Claude Dunbar Briggs; her sister, Claudia Briggs; and two half-brothers, Alfred Briggs and Charles Briggs. She is survived by her children – Shirley Samuels, Lawrence Samuels, Nils Samuels, Rolf Samuels, and Lisa Samuels – and by ten grandchildren.

At her request, no funeral will be held. For those who wish to mark the occasion of Margaret Ann's death, please consider contributing to Friends of Alum Creek and its Tributaries (friendsofalumcreek.org), the non-profit she founded in her retirement.
