Green Lawn Cemetery

Green Lawn Cemetery Enjoy history, artwork, nature, architecture, an arboretum and bird watching.

Organized as a non-profit association in 1848, Green Lawn Cemetery has served Columbus, Ohio over 150 years. Few cemeteries in America can match the natural beauty of our landscaping, trees, and ravines. We offer a vast treasure for Columbus historians, bird watchers, and a peaceful escape for those seeking rest and quiet from the busy city life.

Your service shines, reminding the community that compassion still lives through hands willing to give without expecting reward. THANK YOU to the 28 volunteers who donated their time & energy to pick up 60 bags of litter in Green Lawn Cemetery this morning. We are grateful for your help.

It's always an exciting day when we add new art to the cemetery, and today we added the second in our series of three deer, "Waiting for Her Beau". Like our first deer, "The Green Lawn Birder" in the ravine, this was the creation of local artist Renate Fackler. This deer is the lady-friend of our birder, and patiently waits for him with a picnic basket near our gazebo. While the birder highlights the natural, park-like qualities of the rural cemetery movement, our new deer reminds us of how families would periodically visit their lots to trim brush and straighten things up, often bringing a picnic lunch for after. Next year we plan to complete the series with her father, titled "The Chaperone", that will highlight how rural cemeteries provided 19th century men a socially acceptable place to grieve.

Our Woodcock Cotillion was successful tonight, 31 folks spent an hour or so waiting for the sunset performance of the American woodcock and were rewarded hearing several of them using both the loud “PEENT” call on the ground and their delicate mating call in flight. We only got a quick glimpse of one- they tend to get active right at dark and can be tough to get a good look at. Old timers remember them by their alternate name, the Timber doodle. We also saw some bats, did some star gazing, and heard what for many of us was the first eastern towhee of the year.

TRIVIA TIME...

Did you know Green Lawn Cemetery is the second largest cemetery in Ohio?

Opened in 1849, Green Lawn spans 325 acres, with 270 acres developed so far. At this pace we have at least 100 years before we will be "filled up".

Spring Grove is Cincinnati is Ohio's largest cemetery at 735 acres.

Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, CA is the largest (non-government) cemetery in the country at 1400 acres!

Every year about this time OSU Professor Dr. Tamaki Yuri brings her biology students to Green Lawn Cemetery to gain field experience identifying birds of Ohio. As part of an Ohio Audubon Important Bird Area and an arboretum, Green Lawn is much more than a cemetery! One example of the educational role that such a rich greenspace and vital institution plays in our community.

Calling all car buffs! We have discovered this 1960 or earlier photo of the chapel which shows several interesting things such as the violet outer Tiffany glass in the dome (restored and back in place as of November), the original wood doors which perhaps not surprisingly are very much like the doors of the Hayden mausoleum, that the copper finial and frame of the dome were painted to match the building, and a number of smaller details.

In the background right of the building you can see a blue and white two tone car - almost certainly 1950s vintage. Can anyone identify the year, make, and model? Knowing the year would narrow the date range that the photo was taken.
