St. Gregory of Nyssa Orthodox Church

St. Gregory of Nyssa Orthodox Church An Orthodox Christian Church in the Diocese of the Midwest (OCA). Vespers are at 6pm Saturday evenings and Divine Liturgy is at 9:30am Sunday mornings!

Our parish is intentionally situated near the campus of The Ohio State University, in order to minister to the Orthodox students and seekers attending this institution of higher learning. We are blessed to attract students from other nearby colleges—as much as an hour away! Because of our urban setting, we are blessed with the ministry to those living in or near our neighborhood. Our Saturday lunc

h program has expanded to include Tuesday evening meals, Sunday lunch, opportunities to improve skills and learning, volunteering, and learning about the Orthodox Christian faith. These unique characteristics have helped foster a vibrant and growing parish centered around worship of Jesus Christ our Savior. We hope you will find St. Gregory’s to be a place in which you can find the Risen Lord Christ, along with fellowship, as you journey towards salvation.

Day of the Holy Spirit! June 1, 2026 🕊️💛☘️

At Vespers on the day of Pentecost, we hear that the Holy Spirit is “the Fountain of goodness, through Whom the Father is known, and the Son is glorified.” He is “the living Fountain of spiritual gifts” Who “purifies us from our sins.” It is by the Holy Spirit that “the prophets, divine Apostles, and martyrs are crowned.” He is the source of life and of sanctification.

This whole week is fast-free, and the Leave-taking of Pentecost occurs on Saturday. ☀️

Great Feast of Pentecost! 5/31/26 🕊️☦️☘️
-Vigil Sat. 6pm, Divine Liturgy Sun. 9:30am, Kneeling prayers Sun. 6pm🙏💛🌿

In the Church’s annual liturgical cycle, Pentecost is “the last and great day.” It is the celebration by the Church of the coming of the Holy Spirit as the end—the achievement and fulfillment—of the entire history of salvation. For the same reason, however, it is also the celebration of the beginning: it is the “birthday” of the Church as the presence among us of the Holy Spirit, of the new life in Christ, of grace, knowledge, adoption to God and holiness.

This double meaning and double joy is revealed to us, first of all, in the very name of the feast. Pentecost in Greek means fifty, and in the sacred biblical symbolism of numbers, the number fifty symbolizes both the fulness of time and that which is beyond time: the Kingdom of God itself. It symbolizes the fulness of time by its first component: 49, which is the fulness of seven (7 x 7): the number of time. And, it symbolizes that which is beyond time by its second component: 49 + 1, this one being the new day, the “day without evening” of God’s eternal Kingdom. With the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ’s disciples, the time of salvation, the Divine work of redemption has been completed, the fulness revealed, all gifts bestowed: it belongs to us now to “appropriate” these gifts, to be that which we have become in Christ: participants and citizens of His Kingdom.

THE VIGIL OF PENTECOST

The all-night Vigil service begins with a solemn invitation:

“Let us celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit,
The appointed day of promise, and the fulfillment of hope,
The mystery which is as great as it is precious.”

In the coming of the Spirit, the very essence of the Church is revealed:

“The Holy Spirit provides all,
Overflows with prophecy, fulfills the priesthood,
Has taught wisdom to illiterates, has revealed fishermen as theologians,
He brings together the whole council of the Church.”

☦️💒Memorial liturgy Saturday May 23 9:30am
Remembering our Anthony Schultz on his 40th day of repose and other dear departed ones.

Memory Eternal!

“Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth.”
