All too often in the midst of the reporting on Haiti, we hear that the country is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Seldom do students learn about the long history of U.S. involvement in Haiti which has directly contributed to that poverty and challenges today. Nor do they learn that Hai...

Meeting ID: 848 5229 5259
Passcode: 690537

Peace and Social Action Committee at North Columbus Friends Meeting is hosting a “Civil Rights Teach-In” to be presented on Martin Luther King Jr Day (January 18) to recognize and honor unsung civil rights heroes and heroines.

The Teach-In will start with an historical overview and contextualization of racism as an unnatural political construct followed by individual profiles of past civil rights heroes and heroines such as Recy Taylor, Bayard Rustin, F***y Lou Hamer, and Ella Baker. A spotlight will also be placed on NCFM activity during 1950s and 1960s (i.e., fair housing attorney Stanley Robinson)
The presentation will then turn to present day civil rights struggle with specific focus on the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement (Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi) as well as a profile of Cori Bush, the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress.

The Teach In will conclude with a “Call to Action” consisting of a letter writing campaign focused on the recent killings of Casey Goodson and Andre Hill by local law enforcement.
Please join us for this event and feel free to invite friends and family.

On April 30, 1992, the morning after a jury announced their acquittal of four LAPD officers who were videotaped while brutally beating Rodney King, I was meeting with a group of Black, Latinx, White and South Asian immigrant fourth graders, as we finished reading aloud and discussing Jerry Spinelli's Newbery award-winning novel, Maniac Magee (1990). The concluding chapters of the novel include an episode in which Maniac, the story's White male action hero, sets out to confront a family of young white boys who believe in white supremacy.
