DEVOTION:
Memorial Day is often a popular long weekend for BBQs, family-get-togethers, discount shopping sprees, camping or fishing trips and outings at the beach or the lake. These are all fine, of course, but the primary observance of the day is intended to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our national freedoms.
2 Samuel 1:17-27 was a song of lament and remembrance for those who fell in battle against the Philistines on Mt. Gilboa. David wrote this poem as a way of expressing his personal grief over the loss of his best friend, Jonathan, his king, King Saul, as well as the loss of many other soldiers of Israel.
The New King James version follows the Septuagint in giving this poem the title, “The Song of the Bow.” Jonathan was skilled with the bow according to verses like 1 Samuel 20:18-22, 35-40.
The eighteenth verse in our text discloses the purpose David had in mind when he wrote this song, “…it should be taught to the people of Judah…” David was teaching the next generation how to grieve and how to honor the fallen.
Spurgeon believed a better translation of the Hebrew would actually render the title, “The Use of the Bow.” If Spurgeon was right, then it could have been on David’s heart to teach youth how to fight.
