Columbus KTC

Columbus KTC The Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling is a Karma Kagyu meditation center under the guidance of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorje.

The Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling loves to welcome visitors – it’s an important part of our broader mission to be an open and harmonious place for people to make contact with the Dharma. Columbus KTC is guided by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock, NY. "Karma Thegsum Chöling" is a Tibetan name meaning "Place of the Buddha's Teaching of the Three Ve

hicles of the Karma Kagyu Tradition." Karma refers to the Karma Kagyu lineage, sometimes referred to as "the practice lineage" because of its emphasis on meditation. Thegsum "Theg" (proununced Tek) means "vehicle" and "Sum" means "three" - meaning that the KTC teaches all three "vehicles" (or yanas) of Buddhism: Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Chöling "Chö" means Dharma and "Ling" means place. Columbus KTC is a welcoming place for meditation, meditation instruction for beginners and beyond, as well as other Buddhist practices of the Karma Kagyu tradition. It's a center where people interested in Tibetan Buddhism can learn about the Karma Kagyu tradition through classes, our newsletter, and our library

Buddhism’s Most Sacred Holiday: Saka Dawa Observed THIS Sunday, May 31!

Buddhists all over the world are engaging in extra meditation and prayer practices this month in observance of Saka Dawa, the commemoration of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana (passing away).

The lunar month of Saka Dawa, determined by the presence in the sky of the star the Tibetans call “saka,” began May 17 and will end Monday June 15.

Because of the month’s connection with the sacred events in the life of the Buddha, the karmic effects of positive and negative actions done in that month are multiplied many thousand-fold. So it is customary to give to charity, perform charitable acts, make extra offerings on one’s shrine, and do extra dharma practice.

Here’s a short video by our great Kagyu master His Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche on the significance of the Saka Dawa holiday: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18eyzoBRhN/

The Full Moon Day of Saka Dawa is THIS Sunday May 31. At KTC we will celebrate with recitation of special prayers and a special dharma talk by Lama Kathy. Visitors will also have an opportunity to bathe a statue of the Baby Buddha, a ritual dating back to the early days of east Asian Buddhism.

Watch this space and our social media for photos of this special day - and for an announcement about a special “extra merit” Saka Dawa fundraiser. May all beings benefit!
