It is Theology Thursday[Insert air horn]! A common objection to God’s goodness by lay people and academics alike is “why does evil exist?” Here is a couple rebuttals to this objection. First, it must be clear that God does not cause evil, but rather he has a permissive will that allows evil to occur. He allows evil to occur because he respects our free will. Without free will, we don’t have the ability to freely choose between good or bad. Without the ability to freely choose good or bad, we do not have the ability to choose goodness. Without the ability to choose goodness, we can’t choose Love. Without the ability to choose Love, we cannot freely choose God. And the acceptance of God must be freely chosen. Objecting to God’s existence on the ground of evil existing is probably the most appealing to human beings because we have experienced things we could consider evil; however, to reject God because of it is would be irrational. Hope this helps. God bless you all and have a great day!!!!

Thursday’s are now for Theology!

Is God competitive to human nature? Many times people think that God, being that he is all mighty, is against our nature. We tend to think that if we have God in our lives we can’t have desires, passions, enjoyment, etc. However, putting Jesus Christ as the center of our lives is precisely the grounds upon which human beings reach true happiness, perfected passions, and fulfilled desires. Our life should revolve around the good, the true, and the beautiful so that we can reach the fullness of ourselves. God doesn’t ask for us to just sit in our room, pray, read, fast, and only go outside of our room to go to mass. He asks us to do all things with great love and give glory to him. In doing all things with great love, we perfect ourselves and in the process give glory and thanks to God for the beautiful gift of existence.

The full video can be found on YouTube. It is called “Hope in the face of Suicide” by Fr.Mike Schmitz. This video is telling people to pull themselves away from the lukewarm culture of people do not truly care about you or truly love you. The church, at its best, helps one develop the Christian virtue which overcomes depression, namely the virtue of hope. A virtue granted to us by the Holy Spirit; not the empty hope of this world.

Term of the day: freedom. Imagine Micheal Jordan going out onto the court, kicking the ball, throwing the ball into the crowd, and tackling players. This image is what many of us would consider “freedom”, namely to be freed from any constraint. However, Micheal Jordan understood that in the disciplining of his desires; he would have the ability to be truly free within his desire of perfecting the game.

Thursday’s are for the terms! Today’s term is “religion”. Religion originates from the Latin word “religionem” which means, as defined by the Christian church fathers, “the bond between man and God.” A common phrase of today’s time is “I want God but not religion” but what said person is inadvertently saying is “I want God but not a bond between him and I.” Sure, true religion has had many down falls and will continue to have them, but,at its best, it helps develop this bond into one of infinite dimensions. These dimensions are not possible in the capacity of human autonomy.

Figure Friday goes to Fr.Gregor Mendel. Fr.Mendel is known as the “father of genetics”. He learned the practice of genetics by trying to develop new color variations for flowers to place around a local monastery. Prior to his hobby of gardening, he knew nothing of genetics. Faith and science are complimentary to each other!

Let Jesus Christ be the center of your life. He is not competitive to your nature, it is in him where you find your true flourishing. (Creds: Bishop Robert Barron)
