Colossians 3:1-17

In life, it is easy to get angry with other people. We live in a broken world, and we are broken people. We get angry for various reasons, but a lot of times it is possible that our anger is because of what someone else is doing, in which we look down upon them for living a life that we don't agree with. When this happens, we have two choices. Paul tells us in Colossians 3 that we are to put to death the things of the flesh (wrath, anger, malice), and put on the character of the Spirit (humility, kindness, love, forgiveness). When we do this, we can be righteously angry at the sin, but we see the person as a prisoner, in which Paul calls us to teach one another in the truth.

1 Corinthians 15:12-34

There is common agreement in the historicity of the person Jesus. That He taught profound things, that He lived a moral life, and that He even was crucified. Not a lot of people disagree with the historical Jesus. The issue they have is in addressing the resurrection, in which they struggle to believe that Christ rose from the dead. Paul addresses this in 1 Corinthians 15, telling us that Christ has in fact raised from the dead, and therefore those who belong to Him will also raise from the dead as well.

1 Corinthians 15:1-11

As Paul is getting ready to wrap up his letter to the Corinthians, he closes by pointing out the main thing. A church that has been divided, a church that has been living like the pagan world, a church that has struggled with pride and building up each other, is now told the source of what will drive their ability to be a great church, the Gospel of Jesus.

Philippians 2:3-11

When you look at the teachings of the Bible compared to the messaging of culture, you notice that they do not look the same. There may be pockets of culture that attempts to live morally good lives, but not to the degree that Christ calls His disciples to live. The worse thing is that often the church will look like the world, living selfishly and with pride, not seeking their brother or sister's best interest, a true relationship with Christ. As Paul writes to the Philippians, he tells them that their nature is to be different from that of the culture, not one of self-centeredness, but that of Christ centered love for one another, honoring others and thinking of them more than ourselves.

1 Corinthians 13

What is many times considered a marriage passage, is actually for the church. Paul is writing to a church that is seeking spiritual gifts and dividing over those who are not having the same gifts as them. Yet Paul says that the gifts will pass away, but what will remain forever is love. Paul explains to us what love is, giving 14 qualities of divine Godly love.

Over 700 times Scripture uses the word love. Jesus tells us the greatest commandments is to love the Lord with everything we have and love others as ourselves. Nobody would disagree with these statements, but we disagree with what it means to love someone. This morning, we look at what the Biblical definition of love is, and the example set for us.
