We were proud to receive a Hunger Grant from the IN-KY Synod to help stock our Blessing Box.

If you are every hungry and need assistance, our box is located at northern edge of our parking lot at 3600 E. 25th St., Columbus, Indiana.

Our IN-KY Synod Hunger Grant Spotlight series continues with First Lutheran Church in Columbus, Indiana, where a simple ministry is making a meaningful difference every day.

Located across from subsidized housing in a lower-income neighborhood, First Lutheran's Blessing Boxes provide free, accessible food to anyone in need.

Congregation members stock the boxes daily, offering everything from healthy snacks for children to meal items for families. As hunger continues to rise in the community, the boxes are being used more than ever. Children often stop by after school for a snack, while adults rely on the ministry to help stretch limited household resources.

The Blessing Boxes also create opportunities for connection. As neighbors visit the church for food, many seek prayer, conversation, and spiritual care.

Through this Hunger Grant, First Lutheran will purchase additional food to help meet the growing demand and continue sharing Christ's love by caring for both the physical and spiritual needs of their community.

In this week’s Living Liturgy, we invite you to reflect on the candles we use on the altar during worship and the meaning they carry in our shared life of faith.

When the candles are lit, we are reminded of Christ’s light present in the world and among us. Their flame is a visual proclamation that we have gathered to encounter God in worship, illuminating not only the space around us, but our hearts as well.

At the conclusion of worship, one taper remains lit and is carried through the sanctuary. This act serves as a powerful reminder that Christ’s light does not remain confined to the altar or the church building. Instead, it goes with us into our homes, our workplaces, our communities, and the wider world, calling us to reflect that light in how we live and serve.

In this way, the candles remind us that worship both gathers us in and sends us out, bearing Christ’s light for the sake of others.
