St. Jerome Catholic Church

St. Jerome Catholic Church St. Jerome Church and School, located in Columbus WI, is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Madison. Land was donated by A.P.

A vibrant community brought together by faith, Eucharist, and Jesus Christ. Jerome's parish began during the pioneer days of the 19th century. In those days “circuit riding” priests saw to the spiritual needs of the settlers on the frontier. One of them, a zealous man whose reputation preceded him, was Father Martin Kundig. It was under Father Kundig’s direction in the winter of 1856 that Saint Je

rome Parish was established. Birdsey, a local merchant, and work began on our first church in the spring of 1857. The ambitious congregation laid a cornerstone in June 1857 but soon realized they couldn’t complete the undertaking, so a temporary wooden structure was built and occupied. In 1865, missionary Father Edward McGurk resumed the work to the stone structure which eventually formed the center part of the church on Lewis Street.

Make 2026 the happiest and holiest year yet by kicking it off with a spiritual resolution or two!

26 Catholic New Year’s Resolutions for 2026
1. Commit to going to Confession at least once a month.
2. Read Scripture every day. Some options: do the daily Mass readings, which can be found at bible.usccb.org or try the Bible in a Year Podcast with Fr. Mike Schmitz.
3. Volunteer (more) at your parish or with a local charity.
4. Start going to at least one daily Mass each week. If you already do this, add another day or aim to be a daily Communicant!
5. Spend a set amount of time in Eucharistic Adoration each month.
6. Choose a specific day besides Friday to offer a penitential sacrifice (no TV, no social media, no dessert, no alcohol, etc.).
7. Fast a few times a month for specific prayer intentions or people. For example, offer a day of fasting for a loved one who has left the faith.
8. Add 15 extra minutes to your daily prayers.
9. Choose a saint to study and pray to for 2026.
10. Make it a point each month to visit or call a relative or friend who is sick, elderly, or homebound.
11. Commit to reading a different spiritual book each month of 2026.
12. Go on a spiritual retreat.
13. Learn to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
14. Try praying the Angelus each day (set an alarm on your phone for 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. to help you remember!).
15. Pray the Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet every day.
16. Start a small group to study each Sunday’s Mass readings or a spiritual classic.
17. Make a serious effort to reclaim Sunday for God, service, rest, leisure, and family.
18. Send one thank-you card each week to grow in gratitude.
19. Identify three people in your life you can evangelize in the coming year.
20. Each day (at lunch or bedtime) do a spiritual examen.
21. Each month, invite one new person to go to Mass with you.
22. Increase your amount of financial giving to your parish or to different charities.
23. Before you get out of bed in the morning, make the sign of the cross and offer your day to God.
24. Commit to the First Saturday devotion, attending Mass on the first Saturday of five consecutive months.
25. Memorize the corporal and spiritual works of mercy and perform one each month.
26. Make local pilgrimages to other churches or Catholic sites. In the Diocese of Madison, consider visiting Fr. Mazzuchelli’s rectory and grave in Benton, the Green Scapular shrine in Monona, St. Anne’s Chapel in Plain, or the Dickeyville Grotto.
