Holy Saturday (Kedam S’ur) is known as “the unobserved,” a day of deep silence and fasting as we reflect on Christ’s suffering and His descent into Hades to free the captives. The Church teaches that just as God rested after creation, Christ rested in the tomb after completing the work of salvation—bringing life through His death and leading the righteous into Paradise. The stillness of this day reminds us that even in silence, God is at work.
Early in the morning, clergy process with crosses, bells, and green palm strips, proclaiming the good news of Christ’s victory. The palms symbolize peace and renewal, like the olive branch in Noah’s time, showing that sin and death have been overcome. Through readings like the Song of Songs, the Church expresses the soul’s union with Christ, while remembering His promise of resurrection after “three days and three nights,” fulfilling the sign of Jonah and defeating death forever.
