Tomorrow evening begins the holiday of Shavuot, the festival that commemorates the spring harvest and celebrates the receiving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Shavuot means “weeks,” as the Talmud states, “From the time the Jews left Egypt they waited for seven weeks and eagerly counted the days in anticipation of the day when they would be worthy of receiving the Torah.”

We too, have been counting the seven weeks of the Omer period since the second night of Passover in anticipation for when we ourselves finally arrive, hopefully spiritually ready to receive the Torah.

Interestingly enough, another Talmudic commentary suggests that Shavuot means “promises.” When God gave the Torah to the Jewish people, they promised to obey it and remain faithful to God. In return, God promised to cherish the Jews and not exchange them for any other people.

Whether the definition is “weeks” or “promises,” Shavuot is a holy time of reflection in which we are given the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to the study of Torah all night long using ancient texts or contemporary commentary to help us grapple with the complexities of our current lives.

As the counting of the Omer fades, let’s commit ourselves to making new promises to ourselves, to each other and to that inner spark that reminds us that we are not alone.

Chag Sameah and Shabbat Shalom,
Bat-Ami Moses
