From Missouri UMC Pastor, Troy Bowers, on Christmas Happenings at MUMC: "Christmas: Easy as 1...2...3..."
1. Relax. We’ve got you covered. Up in the air regarding your weekend plans? Not sure just how to capture the true meaning of this beautiful time of the year? We are here for you. Check it out…
December 17: 7:00 pm – MUMC Christmas Concert.
“Salvation is Created” Our Chancel choir with a few guest musicians will feature familiar Christmas classics as well as works that may be new to many listeners. Serving both as a concert performance and worshipful experience, you will be immersed in the good news of Jesus’ birth through music.
December 18: 8:00, 9:30 or 11:00 am – Sunday Worship.
We’ll be celebrating the fourth Sunday in Advent in fine fashion! All three worship services will hear the Christmas message through the voice of the shepherds. We will celebrate Christmas Cookie Communion at 8 and 9:30. Our 11:00 worship hour will feature a variety of musical selections from our Chancel Choir.
December 18: 10:30 to 11:00 – Children and Family Christmas Party
Join us in Whittler Hall (Directly below our main sanctuary) as we showcase our children and their church space. EVERYONE is welcome to join and make an ornament, decorate a cookie, write a letter to Jesus, and spread Christmas Joy.
2. Rejoice! Who will you invite to join us for our Christmas Eve worship? Touted by many as the most glorious and meaningful worship service of the entire year, it is an excellent opportunity to invite a co-worker, family member, or friend to worship with us at 5:00, 7:00, 9:00 or 11:00. Every worship service will be a candlelight service and we will share in communion at 11:00.
3. Reflective. Two Christmas poems which always inspire me would be, “The Cross in the Manger” by Ann Weems, and “The Work of Christmas” by Howard Thurman. I would like to share the Ann Weems poem with you for your reflection from now until Christmas Day. Following Christmas, I will share the second poem. Blessed reflections….
“The Cross in the Manger”
If there is no cross in the manger, there is no Christmas.
If the Babe doesn’t become the Adult, there is no Bethlehem star?
If there is no commitment in us, there are no Wise Men searching.
If we offer no cup of Cold water, there is no gold, no frankincense, no myrrh.
If there is no praising God’s name, there are no angels singing.
If there is no spirit of alleluia, there are no shepherds watching.
If there is no standing up, no speaking out, no risk, there is no Herod, no flight into Egypt.
If there is no room in our inn, then “Merry Christmas” mocks the Christ Child, and the Holy Family is just a holiday card, and God will loathe our feasts and festivals.
For if there is no reconciliation, we cannot call Christ “Prince of Peace”.
If there is no goodwill toward others, it can all be packed away in boxes for another year.
If there is no forgiveness in us, there is no cause for celebration.
If we cannot go now even unto Golgotha, there is no Christmas for us.
If Christmas is not now, if Christ is not born into the everyday present, then what is all the noise about?
Ann Weems
Relax. Rejoice. Reflect.
