Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at NAD Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries! Each of us know what it is to be separated from your family on a holiday or carrying the heavy burdens of others during the holidays. Know that you are on our hearts and in our prayers—truly. You are not forgotten or alone.

And most importantly, we’re thankful for YOU.

Chaplaincy is a sacred calling that requires deep theological understanding, proven ministerial competence, and a Christ-centered character. As the apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth, “You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men” (2 Corinthians 3:2–3, NKJV). In the same way, chaplains serve as living letters of God’s love, read daily by those they encounter. May every chaplain, wherever God has called them to serve, continue holding the standards high—faithfully representing the mission and message of Christ in every place and circumstance. - Washington Johnson II, Director, Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries, NAD

My primary function is to provide compassionate care by ensuring that the core mission of our hospital is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our operations. As part of Common Spirit Health, that mission is to "make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all." I am deeply committed to embodying this purpose in everything we do, thereby creating a truly holistic and healing environment. A key component of my role is leading and mentoring our dedicated chaplain team. I ensure they are equipped with the resources and guidance necessary to continue delivering compassionate spiritual care. This care extends to all members of our community: our patients, their families, and our hospital employees. By supporting and empowering our chaplains, I ensure that spiritual and emotional support remains a strong pillar of the overall compassionate care we provide to everyone who walks through our doors.

I am Terry Swenson, DMin and I minister at Loma Linda University. Ours is a Health Science campus made up of eight different schools of healthcare: Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Allied Health, and Religion. Our student body consists of people from 90+ countries, 70+ denominations and religions. The workforce has representation from five different generations. So our department of University Spiritual Care ministers to approximately 5,000 students and 6,000 employees. Our team consists of Dr. Dilys Brooks, PhD, BCC and myself. We provide one-on-one counseling, group events and care circles, religious programming, etc. We work with the campus churches in helping our students connect with and become involved with the church community and their events and outreaches. Both Dr. Brooks and I teach for the School of Religion. We interact with each of the schools through their Spiritual Life and Wholeness Committees and help plan and produce spiritual care initiatives, programing and strategic planning. I also am a member of the University Administration Committees involving the Presidents Committee, Joint Officers and Deans, work with the Vice President for Spiritual Life and Mission and the Spiritual Executive Leadership Committee for Loma Linda University Health.

Before chaplaincy, I had many vocations that provided for my family, but I never felt fully aligned with my purpose. During my time in the chaplaincy program at Loma Linda University, one of my professors said something that struck a deep chord in me: “A vocation is where one’s purpose and passion intersect.” For the first time in my life, I felt that intersection, and I’ve been sharing that truth ever since. Today, I serve as a hospital chaplain at Loma Linda University Medical Center, working in the adult and children’s emergency rooms, pre-op unit, and observation outpatient unit. On any given day, you’ll find me journeying and praying with patients before surgery, standing beside families in moments of crisis, or offering devotion and encouragement to staff. I also respond to trauma calls and provide comfort and spiritual support wherever it’s needed most. My daily prayer is simple: that God would allow me to be what a patient, family member, or staff person needs in that moment. As Philippians 1:6 reminds me: “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Christ Jesus.” I am deeply grateful that God began a good work in me as a chaplain and continues to work through me each day.
