June 7, 1526: Katie gave birth to the Luthers' first child Johannes, more commonly known as Hans. He was named after Martin’s father and also great family friend Pastor Johannes Bugenhagen. It was Bugenhagen who lifted the child from the baptismal font as he was baptized by Deacon George Rörer at 4:00 in the afternoon of the day he was born. Young Hans’ other baptismal sponsors, besides Bugenhagen, were Professor Justus Jonas, artist Lucas Cranach, and the wife of Wittenberg Mayor Hohndorf. Sponsors by proxy were Strassburg Professor Nikolaus Gerbel, the Electoral Vice-Chancellor Christian Baier, and Mansfeld Chancellor Müller.

Here’s what Ernst Kroker says about him in his biography of Katie:

This little Luther was a miracle child [Wunderkind]. What firstborn child isn’t? He shows up in letters to his father’s friends, giving and receiving greetings and gifts, before he was even a week old. Although he didn’t tolerate milk well at first and Katie could give him only a little nourishment, in one year he thrived and developed into cute and strong little Hans, so that his father could proudly write about the homo vorax ac bibax, the little man who heartily gobbles and gulps. In good time, at six months, his first little tooth had come, and his mumbling became more intelligible so that it soon sounded like scolding, but sounded delightful indeed. (Kroker: “The Mother of the Reformation” p. 123)

The young boy in red in Lucas Cranach’s famous altar painting in St. Mary’s church in Wittenberg is thought to be Hans Luther.

Martin Luther’s sister, whose name was probably Margarete, and her husband George Kaufmann both died young, leaving behind six children. Those children moved into the Black Cloister with Martin and Katie. Martin mentions the oldest child, named George after his father, in his 1534 will. It seems that young George was listed to represent his siblings in Martin’s estate.

George became a student at the University of Wittenberg. At one point, he and his friends had gone out for a drinking party and came back making so much noise that Martin said to him angrily, “Drink so that misfortune can come upon you!” After he calmed down a little he is reported to have said, “These people will not live to be old. Most people ruin themselves by their craze for drunkenness.”

We don’t know what later became of George. Hopefully he listened to his uncle.

The painting of 16th century tavern patrons is by Pieter Brueghel the Younger.

Though Jesus was a devout Jew who practiced his faith, he was criticized for eating with tax collectors and sinners—the religiously nonobservant. Jesus criticizes the self-righteous and reminds us that mercy is to be at the heart of our religious practices. God continues to be made known in those on the margins of society, like Matthew the tax collector and the hemorrhaging woman. As we gather each Lord’s day we receive the healing that makes us well and sends us forth to be signs of God’s mercy for the world.

Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

Pentecost derives its name from the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest and the giving of the law on Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover. Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the Holy Spirit as God’s presence within and among us. In Acts the Spirit arrives in rushing wind and flame, bringing God’s presence to all people. Paul reminds us that though we each have different capacities, we are unified in the Spirit that equips us with these gifts. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples, empowering them to forgive sin. We celebrate that we too are given the breath of the Holy Spirit and sent out to proclaim God’s redeeming love to all the world.
