Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we are going to be looking at Jesus' words about worry. And this is important because worry, or fear, of the unknown in our lives in the world is something that every person in the world experiences; we all experience some amount of worry, from worrying about our kids, to worrying about how we are going to make ends meet financially, to worrying about what the future holds. And that one, worrying about what the future holds, is something that I know that many of you are going through right now as my time here at the Church of the 49ers is winding down and you don’t know who your next pastor is going to be. So, this morning I want us to look together at this passage from Matthew and consider what Jesus has to say about the fact that we need not worry.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This Resurrection Sunday, we take a look at Mark's account of this historic event. Specifically, we are going to be looking at how we can be assured that the resurrection is an undeniable, historical fact; how Jesus had to be resurrected to claim full and final victory over sin and death; how He had to be resurrected to buttress His disciples to preach the Gospel; and, finally, what all of this means for us.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we take a look at Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the beginning of the most important week the world has ever known. When we read this story of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, we’re reading the story of Him arriving in Jerusalem so that He could be tortured, crucified, and executed; we’re reading the beginning of the story of the Passion of the Christ. Without this Palm Sunday story, there would be no Good Friday story, and there would be no Easter Sunday story. The story of Palm Sunday is the story of Jesus arriving in the right place at the right time in order to bear the crushing weight of our sins and purchase redemption for all who would call on His name throughout history. It is the moment that Matthew chooses to begin his account of how the Savior saved His people. And this story, while it is such an important story, or perhaps BECAUSE it is such an important story, reveals to us some very important truths about Jesus and who He is.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we are going to take a look at Ruth chapter 2 and the story of how Boaz helped take care of Ruth and Naomi in their time of need. And what we are going to see in this story is how Ruth was weak, Not in the sense of being weak-willed, but in the sense of being unable to provide for herself, like a baby who relies on her mother for all of her needs. In her weakness, she turned to someone who could take care of her, someone who was stronger, a man named Boaz, for provision, protection and comfort. Just as we, because of OUR weakness, must turn to Christ for provision, protection, and comfort.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we conclude our series in Philippians with a look at Paul's final greetings to the church in Philippi. Again, just like last week, these verses seem to be covering a few different topics that are only loosely linked together if they are linked together at all. As Paul is wrapping up his letter, he is hitting on several things that he wants the Philippians to take away from reading it; so, these closing verses do have a sort of scattershot feel to them. However, as we look more closely at these verses, a common thread is there to be found…they are a call to living lives that are loyal to Christ above all else. Specifically, they are a call to be loyal to Christ in two specific ways: by learning to be content in Him and by placing the good of His Kingdom above all else. So, as always, let’s take a look at both of these individually and see how Paul presents them in our passage.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we continue our series on Philippians with a look at 4:2-9. At first glance, Philippians 4:2-9 seem like a series of commands that are only loosely connected, if connected at all. However, what we will see is that these commands serve as a call to Christian living, to practicing our belief. Paul makes this point multiple times in his letter to the Philippians and, being the good apostle and the good pastor that he is, doesn’t leave us to figure out how to do that on our own; he tells us what we should be doing; namely, in this passage, he tells us that, if we are going to truly practice our beliefs, we must be united with other believers, working together toward common goals; we must have unwavering faith; we must focus on good things; and we must live as Scripture calls us to live. So, in this sermon, we will take a look at each of these things individually.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we continue our series in Philippians with a look at Paul's exhortation to live as citizens of heaven. This is important because the truth of the matter is that, as Christians, we are citizens of heaven with all of the benefits and responsibilities that come with it. But, that’s exactly where too many of us run into a problem; we want the benefits of being a citizen of heaven, but we want to avoid the responsibilities that come with it. We want to know that we have a place in God’s Kingdom, that our eternity is secured, but we don’t want to be bothered with living how we are called to live with having to change our behaviors, our attitudes, even our thoughts, to conform to the will and the law of God. This is the issue that Paul is addressing in our passage today: the need to live as citizens of heaven. So, let’s look at this passage together and see what Paul is telling us; and then let’s think about what we need to be doing in our daily lives to live as citizens of heaven.

Dear Church of the 49ers Friends and Family,

This week, we continue our series in Philippians with a look at Paul's exhortation to put no confidence in the flesh. Paul, we see in our passage today, had been making quite a name for himself as a Pharisee and a Jew. He devoted himself to being the best Jew and the best Pharisee he possibly could be, to the point that he was one of the chief tormentors of the early Christians as he believed in his heart that they were committing a grievous act of heresy. But, what we also see in our passage, is that, despite all of his effort and determination, once he met Christ, none of his other accomplishments or worldly achievements meant anything to him. The ONLY thing that mattered to Paul was to know Christ and to spread His Gospel to the world. How much do we all need to learn this lesson from Paul? How much do we all need to remember that there is NOTHING in this world that deserves our confidence, our attention, our devotion other than Jesus Christ. Let us not find any worth, value, or ability in anything other than the fact that we are known to Christ and we belong to Him.
