On this Memorial Day, we remember those who laid down their lives in service to this nation. We honor their sacrifice not with shallow patriotism, but with a deeper commitment to the values so many believed were worth defending: justice, dignity, freedom, and the sacred worth of every human being.

As people of faith, remembrance must move beyond ceremony. To truly honor the fallen is to confront the ongoing realities of violence, division, racism, hatred, poverty, and injustice that still wound our communities and our world. Memorial Day calls us not only to gratitude, but to accountability.

We pray for the families who carry grief that never fully leaves. We pray for veterans who continue to bear visible and invisible scars. And we pray for the courage to become peacemakers in a world too often shaped by fear and conflict.

May we never glorify war while ignoring the cost of human life. And may we never stop laboring for the day when swords are beaten into plowshares and peace becomes more than a hope, but a lived reality for all God’s children.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, God’s mercies never come to an end.” - Lamentations 3:22
