In Matthew 5:4, Jesus is speaking in the Beatitudes, where He describes the kind of people who are truly blessed in God’s eyes. When He says, “Blessed are they that mourn,” He is referring to people who are going through deep sadness, loss, grief, or emotional pain. Mourning here is not just about death; it can also include any kind of brokenness or heaviness of heart that someone carries in life.

At first, it might sound surprising that Jesus calls such people “blessed.” But He is not saying that sadness itself is good. Instead, He is recognizing that God sees those who are hurting and does not ignore their pain. Their tears and struggles are not unnoticed or meaningless to Him.

Then He says, “for they shall be comforted.” This is the promise. It means that God Himself comes near to those who are grieving and brings comfort, peace, and healing. This comfort may come through His presence, through hope, through time, or through support and encouragement from others. It is a reassurance that sorrow is not the final outcome.

So in simple terms, this verse is saying that those who are hurting and grieving are not forgotten, God is close to them, and He will bring them comfort and healing. It’s a reminder that in times of sadness, God does not stand far away but comes near with care, understanding, and peace.

This month at Little Lights Play Day, the children will learn about “The Wise and Foolish Builders” from the Bible. Through hands-on activities, stories, music, and play, we’ll explore what it means to build our lives on a strong foundation by listening to and following Jesus. The children will discover how the wise builder built his house on the rock, while the foolish builder built on the sand, teaching us the importance of making good choices and trusting God in every season.

In Matthew 5:7, Jesus is speaking in what is often called the Beatitudes, where He describes the kind of heart that is truly blessed in God’s eyes. When he says, “Blessed are the merciful,” he is talking about people who show mercy to others. Mercy means choosing compassion instead of judgment, kindness instead of harshness, and forgiveness instead of holding on to anger or revenge. It’s about seeing someone’s weakness or failure and responding with understanding rather than condemnation.

Then Jesus says, ""For they shall be shown mercy.” This is a principle of how life and relationships work under God’s guidance. When people extend mercy to others, they also come to experience mercy themselves. It reflects a kind of cycle: how we treat others shapes how we experience and understand kindness in return. It also points to God’s character, because God Himself is merciful, and those who practice mercy begin to reflect Him more deeply.

So in simple terms, this verse is saying people who choose to be kind, forgiving, and compassionate toward others will also experience mercy in their own lives. It’s a reminder that living with a soft and forgiving heart not only blesses others but also brings grace and blessing back into our own lives.

When he says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,” he is emphasizing that giving is meant to be intentional and personal. It’s not about being pressured or forced by others but about making a sincere decision within yourself based on what you are willing and able to offer.

Then he adds, “not reluctantly or under compulsion.” This means giving should not come from guilt, hesitation, or external pressure. If someone gives while feeling forced or unwilling, the heart behind it is missing. Paul is teaching that the value of giving is not only in the amount but also in the spirit behind it.

Finally, he says, ""For God loves a cheerful giver.” This highlights what truly matters to God, the attitude of joy and willingness. A cheerful giver is someone who gives freely, gladly, and without resentment because they understand the goodness of sharing and the blessing of generosity.

So in simple terms, this verse is saying: Give from your heart, not from pressure, and let your generosity come with joy. It’s a reminder that God cares deeply about the spirit behind our actions and that true giving is meant to be willing, peaceful, and filled with sincerity rather than obligation.

In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul is speaking to encourage people who are struggling with temptation and difficulty. When he says, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind,” he is first reminding us that what we face is not unusual or unique. The struggles, urges, and pressures we experience are part of the human condition. We are not alone in them, even when it feels that way.

Then he says, “And God is faithful.” This is the foundation of the entire verse. It means that God is reliable, trustworthy, and consistent. Even when people feel weak or overwhelmed, God does not abandon them in their struggle.

Next, “he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” This does not mean temptation is easy, but it does mean that God sets limits. Nothing we face is without boundaries, and we are not placed in situations where we are completely powerless. There is always strength available to endure, even if we don’t immediately feel it.

Then the verse continues, “But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” This is a promise of hope. God does not only allow challenges; He also provides escape routes, solutions, or moments of clarity where we can choose a better path. The “way out” may look like wisdom, strength, support from others, or simply the ability to pause and choose differently.

So in simple terms, this verse is saying, ""Everyone faces temptation, but you are never alone in it."" God is faithful, He limits what you are given, and He always provides a way to overcome and endure. It’s a reminder that even in struggle, there is always hope, help, and a path forward with God’s support.
