Good Shepherd was honored to host master iconographer Veronica Royal for conducting a weeklong workshop teaching regular people to write icons, and helping several of her students from last year to hone their craft. Interested in attending a session next year? Talk to one of this year's students.

There'll be fun adventures tonight and then packing and cleaning and driving back down the mountain tomorrow, but the service part is done. And what a week of service -- and worship, and fun -- it's been.

St. Barnabas, one of the first Christian disciples at Jerusalem, was the one who introduced St. Paul to the Apostles after Saul’s Damascus experience, and he and Paul made a missionary trip to Cyprus. Barnabas is believed to have traveled widely on numerous missionary trips, preaching the Gospel and assisting the poor.

The Book of Common Prayer provides us with this prayer for him:

Grant, O God, that we may follow the example of thy faithful servant Barnabas, who, seeking not his own renown but the well-being of thy Church, gave generously of his life and substance for the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

“O God, by the preaching of your blessed servant Columba you caused the light of the Gospel to shine in Scotland: Grant, we pray, that, having his life and labors in remembrance, we may show our thankfulness to you by following the example of his zeal and patience; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”

Today we commemorate the Saint’s Day of Columba, Abbot of Iona, who is remembered as one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Saint Columba was a sixth-century Irish abbot and missionary credited with spreading Christianity to the pagans in what is today Scotland. He founded the important abbey on Iona, which was a dominant religious and political institution for centuries.
