The flowering of the cross represents the transition from Good Friday to Easter, from meditation on Jesus’ death to joyful celebration of his resurrection. The ceremony transforms a barren cross, a reminder of Jesus’ death, into an Easter symbol.

This year, as you come to Easter Sunday Service at 10am, we invite you into the Sanctuary of Main Street UMC between 9am and 9:45am with your family come to the cross and add flowers! Flowers can be from your garden, your favorites that you purchased, or you can place flowers provided by the church.

The 40-day period of Lent represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him. Lent asks believers to set aside a time each year for similar fasting, marking an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.

Lent begins today, Ash Wednesday, where we remember our sinful mortality.

If you are in the downtown Columbia area and don’t have a place to receive your ashes join us along with Main Street United Methodist Church and Mt. Olive AME Church at 6:00 P.M. for a Ash Wednesday Service at Main Street UMC. We’d love to have you.

Meanwhile, may Lent be a transformative time for you as we walk with Jesus through these 40 days.

🎄🎁✨We are excited about Christmas at Greene Street UMC and Main Street United Methodist Churches!

Church family, we are soooo thankful that you are a church that loves and gives so faithfully! Because of your generosity and love for God and love for people: we were able to give over $3,000.00 worth of Christmas gifts to families that our congregations adopted for the year.

We participate in the popular Families Strengthening Families campaign to brighten the Christmas holiday for struggling families in the Midlands area. This project is well-known, with each family having been vetted for need. Thank you to our Ministry Team for organizing this effort to bring holiday cheer and Christlike love to families this season!🌟🎉

🎄A Note of Radical Hospitality during the Holidays 🕯

Please keep in mind that many new folks tend to come to worship during the Advent/Christmas season, which begins this coming Sunday, Nov 27th.

We ask that you be intentional with your hospitality in ways like these:

Remember what it was like when you came to GSUMC for the first time

Park in 'far' spaces, if you are able, to allow new folks easier access

Get here a little earlier than you're used to--new folks tend to arrive early, and coming into an empty sanctuary is awkward

Sit in the middle of the pews to provide easier access to late-comers

Keep your eyes open for new folks and greet them warmly

Even if you see someone who isn't 'new,' but you don't know their name, introduce yourself!

Continuously invite people to Sunday School, small groups, special services, etc.

YOU are welcome at Greene United Methodist, 'The Church in the Heart of the City, With the City at Heart': committed to making more disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
