First Lutheran Church of Columbia Heights

First Lutheran Church of Columbia Heights ELCA Congregation (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) We will honor each other's diverse stories and continue living connected to God and to each other.

At First Lutheran Church, we are called to connection with God, each other, and our neighbors in and beyond Columbia Heights. God connects with us through the reconciling act of Jesus Christ and the daily ministry of God’s Spirit. We connect to God as a spiritual community through worship and prayer, study and the sacraments, and mutual support and service. This sacred connection calls us into rel

ationship with our neighbors with whom God’s love has knit us together. We connect especially to the neighborhood and its youth who have been an essential part of our story from the very beginning when a rural ministry to immigrant children evolved into a long-standing and ever-present calling to love, nurture and mentor young people in our community. As our neighborhood and world changes we commit to adjust as well, making space for growth, healing, generosity and community-building. We rely on God's Spirit to guide us. We are a welcoming community that encourages people to come as they are. Some of us come in jeans others in suits. All ages, cultural backgrounds, and abilities are welcome to worship God, grow in faith, and eat together. We follow a pattern of worship that is an ancient tradition, but with varied types of music and modern preaching. You’ll find that we enjoy sharing meals together, whether in Communion during worship, Wednesday nights, or at our Sunday Community Meal. We appreciate that children are part of worship, but on occasion, everyone needs a break. We have a Nursery Nook where parents may still listen to the service while children play quietly. First Lutheran strives to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone in our church, our community, and our partner organizations. We seek to connect with and serve our neighbors wherever they are on their faith and life journey. We aim to support people of every race and culture, age and ability, family structure and economic status, and every sexual orientation and gender.

Join us for a novena - nine days of prayer! Day 2

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Prayer Prompt: The followers of Jesus asked how they would know what to do and when to do it. Jesus promised them this gift of the Holy Spirit to empower, guide and lead them into witness.

How might we listen for the Holy Spirit in our lives and our church?

Who are the people in our city, region, state and world that we can share God’s story with?

Join us for a novena - nine days of prayer! Day 1

“While staying with them, Jesus ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” - Acts 1:4-5

Prayer Prompt: This is the invitation from Jesus to the first ever novena--simply to stay together and wait.

Have you ever prayed without knowing exactly what you’re praying for? What was that like?

Write a prayer inviting the Spirit to show up in our congregation and community.
