WHAT REAL CORRECTION IS SUPPOSED TO DO

We've been conditioned to think that weighing in on someone else's life is always a bad thing. Just the thought of it doesn't feel good.

Calling out something in a friend's life is really about helping them deal with the challenges, the struggles, and the sin they're carrying. The whole aim is to build them up, not to tear them down.

The version we're afraid of is the opposite. My whole aim is to tear you down so I can build myself up, to make myself feel better. I find things in your life to judge so I can feel better about mine.

Real correction sounds different. I want to make distinctions so I can build you up and come alongside you, but it doesn't work unless you first look at your own life. So what would you find in yours?

TWO SIGNS YOU CAN TRUST THE PERSON LEADING YOU

Some leaders lord it over people, dominate them, and use them for their own purposes.

Peter wrote to church leaders about that in 1 Peter 5:3: "Don't lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example."

Leading by example means getting out in front and saying, follow me as I follow Christ. Worldly leaders who are in it for themselves have rules for thee, but not for me.

When you see a church leader walking their talk and practicing what they preach, that's the kind of leader you can trust. Hebrews 13:17 goes further, calling us to obey and submit to our leaders as those who watch over our souls.

The second sign: biblical leaders come alongside you. They step into your walk with Christ and help you keep going in it.

Paul told the church in Corinth what that looks like in 2 Corinthians 1:24: "That does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm."

Jesus got after the Pharisees for the very opposite habit. They laid heavy burdens on people, some of them unbiblical, then wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone carry them.

So, two signs mark a leader worth following: they live out what they're calling you to live out, and they walk it out with you. Who's leading you right now, and which of those two are they doing?

The one sign you can actually trust a leader.

God never intended it to be Jesus and me alone. He always intended it to be Jesus and us, as a group, as a body.
