Many of you know that I am an identical twin and I always felt extra-blessed to have Scott in my life. We were the best of friends and always cherished visiting each other after our childhood years growing up in Northern Indiana. We both were called into pastoral ministry and loved the people that God put into our lives.
As many of you have heard the story, Scott came out to visit Linda and me here in Colorado Springs on October 27, 2011. We knew that Scott had some health issues, but little did we know then that while he was visiting us, his health would decline. On that October 27th, we got him home and he immediately unpacked his suitcases. While he was unpacking, he pulled out five ties and told me that he would like me to have them. Two of those ties are pictured here. I was a bit curious at first why he would bring five ties with him when he had planned to only stay with us for two weeks. I then realized that he wanted to give them to me. The tie on the left reads: "THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME." The other tie is a Scripture tie that reads: "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE" taken from John 14:6. I had seen Scott wear these two ties at times. I remember saying to him, "Are you sure you want me to have these ties? I know that they are very special to you."
Nine days later on November 5th, Scott lost feeling in his right arm & side and we took him to the emergency room at St. Francis Hospital here in Colorado Springs. They took a Cat-Scan and noticed that there was something lodged near the brain. The next day, they took an MRI, and later that day we were given the news that Scott had stage 4 brain cancer. It was too far advanced for any surgical options and the surgeon said he had maybe three weeks to live. Linda and I decided to care for him in our home with the assistance of hospice. My sister and mom came here to see him and help care for him. On November 30, 2011, while I was quoting John 14: 1-6 to him, including the verse on the tie on the right, Scott took his last breath here and his first in the presence of Jesus.
Scott would often say in our conversations that "THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME." Yes, God put us here for awhile, but for the believer in Jesus Christ, we are living on earth but longing for Heaven.
In our growing up years, my sister, brother and I would often sing at home around the piano and in church services as well.
One of the songs Scott and I especially sang was "UNTIL THEN' written by Stuart Hamblen. In these difficult and uncertain days, the words of this song should put life into perspective. Here are the words of the song, "UNTIL THEN."
"My Heart can sing when I pause to remember, A heartache here is but a stepping stone. Along a trail that's winding always upward, This troubled world is not my final home.
The things of earth will dim and lose their value, if we recall they're borrowed for a while. And things of earth that cause the heart to tremble, remembered there will only bring a smile.
But until then my heart will go on singing, until then with joy I'll carry on. Until the day my eyes behold the city, until the day God calls me home."
