Romans 8 is one of the most powerful and popular chapters in all the Bible. In it, Paul describes with great detail what it means to live as Christian, both now and for eternity. The chapter begins, as well, with one of the most comforting statements in all the Bible.

The Lord is communicating with Jacob in a dream, as he rests his head on a rock in the wilderness (Genesis 28:10–14). In the dream, Jacob sees God standing at the top of a ladder-like structure reaching from earth to heaven. In the previous verse, the Lord spoke to Jacob the very same promises He had made to Abraham. He would give Jacob's descendants this land. Those descendants would be as the dust of the earth spreading out in every direction. And through those descendants, all the peoples of the earth would be blessed.

Contemplating the fact that God wove him together in his mother's womb, David praised God for His omnipotent act of creation. He especially notes how God's creative power is beyond human comprehension.

James continues encouraging his readers to express their dependence on God. This is done by participating in prayer. In previous verses, he has asked them to respond to trouble by praying to God, to respond to cheerfulness by singing songs of praise, and to respond to illness or spiritual weakness by calling for elders of the church pray for them.

The prophet Isaiah stated that God's influence was especially strong on him as this message was revealed. The Lord told Isaiah not to "walk" in the same way as the people of Judah. This means Isaiah was not to follow their example. His people have earned the Lord's judgment with their sinful beliefs and practices (Isaiah 8:11).

Paul's suffering for the sake of his mission for Christ was not easy by any human standard. In chapter 1 of this letter, he described a recent incident that left him and his friends "so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself" (2 Corinthians 1:8). In other words, he felt the impact of his suffering. His experiences were not trivial—they were brutal. Now, Paul wants his readers to see that, by comparison, the very worst suffering experienced on earth is only a "light and momentary affliction" when compared with the glory of the eternity with God that is to come.

Human beings are fallible. The premise of this psalm is that Asaph wrongly became bitter and unhappy when he could not understand God's ways (Psalm 73:2–3, 21–22). After resolving his unhappiness (Psalm 73:15–18), he declares God as the most important aspect of his life. Even if his health failed, Asaph knew this would not mean God had failed him (Romans 8:38–39). To view God as his "portion," means to see the Lord as the source of his happiness.

Paul is describing some of the benefits for those who, by faith in Christ, have been justified and made right before God with our sins forgiven. These benefits are only available to believers—the "we" Paul uses here indicates saved Christians, not the entire human race. So far, Paul has shown that we live in a state of being at peace with God forever, no longer in danger of receiving His angry justice for our now-forgiven sin. Also, by faith, we have obtained access to God's grace and are even now receiving it. Finally, we have joy that comes from having the absolutely sure hope of experiencing the glory of God for eternity.

Prior verses have warned of an upcoming judgment. This wrath will not be random, or an act of revenge. God promises to distinguish between the righteous and the wicked (Malachi 3:18). The judgment is symbolized as an "oven," or a "furnace," which are purposeful tools, not haphazard accidents. The primary distinction between those who will be destroyed and those who will be saved is respect for God. Arrogance and disobedience are signs of disrespect. "Fear," here used in the sense of "reverence," means treating God with the devotion He deserves.

In this verse the psalmist's memory of joyful worship turns quickly to sorrow, then just as quickly to hope. It is not out of the question for believers like the psalmist to experience inner turmoil. However, the psalmist refused to let depression win. He told his soul to hope in God, and he was sure his turmoil would turn to praise of the Lord, whom he trusted as his deliverer. The same rhetorical question, and the same answer, is used at the end of the psalm (Psalm 42:11).
