Teaching Tuesday

Do you ever wonder what an indulgence is?

There are two types of indulgence:
* Plenary indulgence: Removes all temporal punishment; can be gained once per day (except in danger of death).
* Partial indulgence: Removes part of the temporal punishment; can be gained multiple times in a day.

To receive any indulgence, you must:
* Be a baptized Catholic in the state of grace (not excommunicated or in schism)
* Have sacramental confession for the remission of sin
* Receive Holy Communion with devotion
* Pray for the Pope’s intentions (e.g., one Our Father, one Hail Mary, one Gloria)
* Have complete detachment from all sin, even venial sin
* Perform the specific act attached to the indulgence

These conditions can be fulfilled within about 20 days before or after the indulgenced act.

The Memorare. It is a short but powerful prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking her to intercede on our behalf.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta is credited with creating the “Flying Novena” — also called the Emergency Novena — as a way to pray the Memorare prayer quickly when time is short and an urgent answer is needed. Pray
Nine Memorare prayers in a row, each for the same intention. Then, pray One additional Memorare in thanksgiving to Our Lady for hearing the intention.

Today is the first Friday of September.

The First Friday devotion is a Catholic practice honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus by receiving Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month for nine consecutive months, promising special graces and final perseverance.

The First Friday devotion is rooted in the 17th-century apparitions of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in France. Jesus revealed His immense love for humanity through His Sacred Heart and requested that the faithful receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays in reparation for sins committed against His Heart. This practice is a profound expression of love, reparation, and devotion to Christ, fully approved by the Catholic Church.
