Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history.

On June 19, 1865, more than 160 years ago, the last enslaved African Americans in Texas finally received the news of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This moment marked the true end of slavery in the United States and symbolizes the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Black communities.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom; it is a time to reflect on the long journey toward justice and equality, to acknowledge the struggles and sacrifices made by countless individuals, and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight against systemic racism and injustice.

As we commemorate this day, let’s uplift Black voices, honor Black history and culture, and work together to create a future where freedom, opportunity, and dignity are realities for everyone.

This past weekend, our community joined a nationwide movement for Wear Orange Weekend (June 5–7) to honor survivors, remember victims, and raise vital awareness about the public health crisis of gun violence.

Yesterday, we gathered in solidarity and prayer at Benet Hill Monastery, wearing orange to show our collective commitment to a safer future. This movement is not about taking away the rights of responsible gun owners—it is about looking clearly at the numbers and working together toward change. In the U.S., gun violence impacts thousands of families every year, with suicides accounting for 62% of gun-related deaths and homicides accounting for 35%.

Let’s continue to stand together, educate ourselves, and build a future free from gun violence.
