St. Mary’s Cathedral Music

St. Mary’s Cathedral Music Information on the sacred music program at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, seat of the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

From Brett Patterson:

This past Wednesday I was informed that, due to a drop in financial contributions to St. Mary’s Cathedral, the decision had been made to lay me off and to eliminate the position of full-time Director of Music at the Cathedral effective immediately. This unexpected decision saddens, shocks, and disappoints me. I want to express my thanks and gratitude to the members of the Cathedral Choir and cantors for their tireless work and commitment to the music program. I’d also like to thank all the parishioners and visitors who would regularly express their appreciation for the music.

The Cathedral Choir at St. Mary’s Cathedral has paid openings for a Tenor Section Leader and Bass Section Leader. The Cathedral Choir sings for the 9:00 am Solemn Mass on Sundays and rehearses at 7:00 pm on Thursdays. Section leaders also serve as cantors on a rotating basis for the 4:00 pm Saturday vigil mass and 9:00 am Sunday Mass. The Cathedral Section Leaders must have excellent vocal skills, a love of choral music, and feel comfortable singing with a healthy, straight tone. Interested candidates should contact Director of Cathedral Music and Organist Brett Patterson at [email protected] or 719-473-4633.

On February 2nd and 3rd, St. Mary’s Cathedral music program is excited to welcome two-time Grammy award winning tenor Paul Phoenix! Mr. Phoenix will be working with the Cathedral Choir and joining the Choir for the 9:00 am mass. You will also be able to hear him at the 4:00 pm mass on Feb. 2nd and the 10:30 am mass on Feb. 3rd. Mr. Phoenix visited the Cathedral and coached the Cathedral Choir this past fall. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord falls on Feb. 2nd, during which the reading containing the text of the Nunc Dimittis (“Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace...”) occurs. The setting of the Nunc Dimittis composed by Geoffrey Burgon, used as the soundtrack for the closing credits in the original BBC film adaptation of John le Carré’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” starring Sir Alec Guinness, was composed for Mr. Phoenix. His recording of the Nunc Dimittis as a choirboy at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, was used in the film. Mr. Phoenix will be singing this wonderful arrangement accompanied by Cathedral Director of Music Brett Patterson. We are excited to welcome Paul back to Colorado Springs!

It was absolutely wonderful to have Paul Phoenix work with the Cathedral Choir at rehearsal last night. Our youngest member was especially excited to meet Paul! The Cathedral Choir is currently recruiting tenors and basses. If you are interested in joining the Choir and having opportunities like working with Paul, please send me a message through this page!
